The Toronto Star reports that the band, who have a deep history in the east-end neighbourhood of Riverdale, will be honoured with their very own street! MusiCounts, Canada's music education charity, associated with The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS), is pleased to announce that Jim has been named as a MusiCounts Ambassador. This news comes just days before the annual JUNO Cup, the rockers vs. the NHL greats that has become a highlight of JUNO week whose proceeds go to MusiCounts initiatives. In Jim's words, "I am very proud to be an Ambassador for MusiCounts. Through the program I have seen a spark light up in so many kids because they got a new piccolo or a new violin and they hear a sound they never thought they could make. I feel like I represent many musicians who would love to inspire others to follow the path into the world of music." Jim has long been a champion for music education. In the past, he has supported MusiCounts as a participant in Band Aid Grant celebrations at local schools and represented MusiCounts at fundraising events. In addition to being a driving force behind the JUNO Cup, Jim served as a member of the MusiCounts Advisory Committee for the past seven years, providing valuable artist insight and perspective on how MusiCounts can thrive in its fundraising mission to put more instruments in schools to benefit the children. Jim is a friend of MusiCounts and a shining example to other artists of how their support can help bring music to our schools. Jim joins Nikki Yanofsky as an ambassador for the organization.

Blue Rodeo drummer Glenn Milchem will see his band The Swallows release their fourth album Demystified on March 1. The band will be celebrating the release with an album launch at Toronto's The Piston on March 3. You can download the track "Shoot Out Sparks" here. In truth, Milchem intended to make a sonically diverse, acoustic-based record when he first conceived of Demystified. Having collaborated with artists ranging from Change of Heart, Andrew Cash, and Holy ***, Milchem clearly has an eclectic array of musical interests and, as such, he needs an outlet to express them. So, when he gets the inkling to record his own songs, he usually does some multi-tracking and plays every instrument himself (including a yali tambur, a Turkish bowed instrument, featured on “The Day is Upon Us”). That’s pretty much what happened with Demystified at first, but as the sessions at Twang Recordings with co-producer Carl Petzelt progressed, it got rockier and rockier and musicians like John Borra (bass), Andrew Innanen (drums, since replaced in the live band by Brad Kilpatrick), Jonny James (guitar, since replaced in the live band by Dean Drouillard), Michael Boguski (keyboards), and special guests Bob Packwood and Julie Fader were called in to bolster a couple of songs. Otherwise, all Milchem, all the time. Milchem sees Demystified, as his most multi-layered record yet, both musically and philosophically. He can write an uncharacteristic love tune to his wife (“Shoot Out Sparks”), as easily as he can reconsider his perspective on war after Blue Rodeo performed for the troops in Afghanistan (“Outside the Wire”). Yet he does it all really artfully and deceptively, like only the best pop song writers really can. The Swallows may only appear sporadically but, as Demystified demonstrates, when they do, they’re here to leave a definitive mark.

If you're a fan of Glenn's side project, The Swallows, we have some exciting news for you! Their new album Demystified is being released on March 1, 2011 and you can snag a copy of the CD and/or vinyl at the release party on March 3. The launch show will be happening at The Piston (937 Bloor St. W, Toronto, ON) with doors at 9:30 pm EST and Dany Laj opening. Prices are as follows: $7, admission only; $10, admission + Demystified CD; $15, admission + Demystified CD and vinyl.
TRACK LISTING: - Shoot Out Sparks
- Outside The Wire
- Disconnecting
- I Broke My Own Heart
- Blame Us
- The One Who Got Away
- Demystified
- Secret City
- Mouths To Feed
- The Era Beyond Guilt
- Absolutes
- The Critics Agree
- The Day Is Upon Us
From Demystified's press release: “On the cusp of the burgeoning indie scene in Toronto, Glenn Milchem’s brainchild, The Swallows, was the result of knowledge culled from years well spent. Aural osmosis is evident in the breadth of musical genres present in Glenn’s repertoire of song and, while long recognized as one of Canada’s premier drummers (Blue Rodeo, Holy ***, Change of Heart, among others), Glenn can now add frontman to list. Following up on the critically acclaimed Awkward Situation, 2011’s Demystified, The Swallow's fourth album, represents a huge step forward in the band’s evolution. Arguably their most ambitious record so far, it also features some of their catchiest pop moments and most extreme sonic experiments.”

Some sad news has come across the Blue Rodeo desk as news of two dear friends passing reached us. Legendary Red Wing/Blackhawk bruiser Bob Probert died July 5 near Windsor, ON. Probert was a member of the NHL Greats pitting him against Jim Cuddy and his Rockers in several Juno Cups. As well, Probert joined Blue Rodeo and several fellow NHL stars in Afghanistan in 2008 when the Stanley Cup toured the Kandahar Air Base. Bob Probert was 45.
And Miriam "Mimi" Braidberg of Mimi's Restaurant succumbed to a heart attack on July 4. Mimi was the proprietor of Mimi's Restaurant, situated just north of Queen and Bathurst in Toronto, ON. The restaurant was a regular for the hip music crowd of the 80s and 90s. She was a long time supporter of Blue Rodeo, and even named a chili after them on the menu. Read about Mimi, "Toronto's Blintz Queen," here on The Pulmyears Music Blog.

More than 50 Canadian musicians lend their voices to single.
Watch the video here!
A constellation of more than 50 Canadian stars - including Jim Cuddy
- gathered in Vancouver’s The Warehouse Studio last month to record a
song in aid of the victims of the Haiti earthquake. Spearheaded by
legendary music producer Bob Ezrin and three-time 2010 Juno Award
nominee K’naan under the banner Young Artists for Haiti, the song and
video – a brand new rendition of K’naan’s "Wavin’ Flag" - will be
available for sale wherever music is sold digitally as of Friday, March
12 at 12:01am ET. All proceeds from the sale of the single will go to
Free The Children, War Child Canada and World Vision Canada in support
of their on-the-ground efforts in Haiti.
"I'm honoured to have experienced the soulful energies of so many
talented individuals who contributed their voices and expertise to
‘Wavin’ Flag’," says K’naan. “The unity and spirit of everyone involved
in the recording reminds us that we all share in the responsibility to
help. We can’t let the situation in Haiti fall off the public’s agenda."
You can support this worthy cause by purchasing the single right here.

Canadian football fans and Blue Rodeo fans rejoice because your two favourite things are coming together on November 29. “I’ve been watching the Grey Cup all my life and it’s really exciting to be playing the Half-time show,” said Jim Cuddy. The CFL announced today that Blue Rodeo will play this year's halftime show, and you get to choose which songs the band plays!

Visit the "Name Your Playlist" contest at GreyCupHalfTimeShow.ca and select three songs from the following list of hits:
- Lost Together
- Hasn’t Hit Me Yet
- Rose Coloured Glasses
- Heart Like Mine
- Diamond Mine
- Trust Yourself
- C’mon
- Til I am Myself Again
- Walk Like You Don’t Mind
- Head Over Heels
Contest is open until November 20, with great weekly prize packs available to be won.
While music is undoubtedly Cuddy's and Keelor's bond, football also brought them together – literally.

“I was the quarterback of the junior team at our high school, and Greg was a senior defensive end, and somehow he missed the memo about not rocking the quarterback during a scrimmage,” Cuddy joked.
“To this day, I tell Jim that I knew back then: as quarterbacks go, he was going to be a great musician. It’s funny to think that 30 years later that we’re actually playing the Grey Cup,” Greg explained.

CBC-TV has a couple of very interesting documentaries airing on Thursday nights for the next few weeks. Each of these programs take a look back at the Canadian music scene in the 1970s and 1980s. This Beat Goes On focuses on the ground-breaking era of great sounds, from glam and progressive rock to punk and reggae of the 1970s. From Gordon Lightfoot and Burton Cummings to Trooper and Loverboy, by the end of the decade the Can-rock revolution had arrived. The second documentary, Rise Up puts the spotlight on the 1980s, an era of big hair and bigger shoulder pads. MTV and MuchMusic have arrived, giving homegrown artists the ability to take off internationally. The late 80s sees the rise of some diverse new sounds, including the alt-country of our own Blue Rodeo and Cowboy Junkies and the hip hop beats of Maestro and Michie Mee. Follow and join in on the conversation about these documentaries right now in the BlueRodeo.com forum. And check your local CBC-TV (and CBC Newsworld) schedules for dates and air times.

It seems that the only crack in the armour was a Juno Cup half-time show sing-off that saw NHL legend Lanny McDonald beat our Jim Cuddy. All in good fun of course!
Congratulations Blue Rodeo!
