Old Country - Who's your fave?

So I was thinking about this the other day... when I was watching that new Johnny Cash DVD that I just got.  There were so many awesome country stars back in the 1960's and 1970's.  It seems to me that the "new country" just isn't nearly as good as the old stuff was.  However, it's nice to see that there are still some bands out there that play the old fashioned style country.  I imagine not too many of you here have heard of the band The Divorcees before... but I'd like to recommend them to you all... especially Lori because I know how much she likes Waylon Jennings... and these guys remind me so much of his style!  The Divorcees are from Moncton and have been together for a number of years now.  They recently won the ECMA for best country recording of the year... and last summer, they opened up for Tim McGraw and Faith Hill at the Country Rocks the Hill concert in Moncton.

So anyway, I was just wondering who your favourite classic country singers are?  I love many of them but I'd have to go with Merle Haggard.  I just love the song "Sing me back home"... amongst many others.  So what about you guys?  Is it Hank Williams?  Johnny Cash?  George Jones?  Marty Robbins?  Johnny Paycheck?  Charlie Pride?  Bill Monroe?  Buck Owens?  Dwight Yoakam?  Vince Gill?

I'm so glad you guys are liking The Divorcees!!  They've come a long way.  Jason Haywood (one of the singers - not the one with the beard, but the other one) is really nice.  I met him many years ago before he started this band.  He was at a Luther Wright and the Wrongs show that Debbie (from this board) and I went to.  Funny eh!  He was playing in another band at the time.  Anyway, I wish them all the success in the world.  They've been getting a lot of good press lately... with the ECMA win and all.  They are heading out West this summer I think... Jason once told me that he would LOVE to open up for Blue Rodeo someday.  I hope it happens for them.  I think it would be a great fit and the BR fans would love them!

Hank Williams definitely for me.  The stuff he wrote was amazing, and with only a few chords, which is nice cause it makes it easier to play.

Waylon Jennings was great too.  And to think he almost went out with Buddy Holly, what luck to have lived another 4 decades.

I love Waylon too!!! That would probably be my pick...I'm gonna check out the Divorcees also, you are right Allison, there's not much out there in the old style...new country is just too poppy now.

Actually Wes, Waylon almost went out INSTEAD of Buddy Holly! He was supposed to get on the plane that day, but gave his seat to Buddy instead. True story... Here are part of the lyrics from "A Long Time Ago" where he talks about the sad event. Sad

"Don't ask me about the years I spent out in the rain
About the ones I spent in love or the ones I spent insane
Don't ask me who I gave my seat to on that plane
    I think you already know
I told you that a long time ago"
