Re: Hey! What happened to my post?

    Bluegirl:

In my original post, there was text included beside this smiley ->  that said: This one could have been used by alot of people when the new board was launched!

All of a sudden, the text isn't there anymore. What gives?! Is someone arbitrarily going in and editing posts without telling us? The text is still there if I click on the edit button, but doesn't show up in the actual post.

I'm hoping that this is just another glitch in the new board and not someone  playing "post police".

    Lori

It's because of the 'less than' sign.  I tried using one in a post, and I ran into the same problem.  html code uses that for tags.

I'm going to try typing two less than signs and see if I get anywhere:

    <

    <

I need to play with this some more.  Daneane!  Where are you?

But that part of the post was there yesterday...I read it & chuckled! So it DID work yesterday! Tongue Tied

Re: Hey! What happened to my post?

For some reason, when I tried to edit the original post this morning, it wouldn't work. I just tried again and left the "less than" sign and it seems ok now. Weird. Maybe it was just one of those things! Tongue Tied

Re: Hey! What happened to my post?

I don't know what happened either. I just clicked on the "edit" button and it allowed me to post the original message. It wouldn't work this morning though. It just kept refreshing the page, but wouldn't post the actual message.

I'll just chalk it up to one of those things!

Re: Hey! What happened to my post?

OK, Lori, I came up with a convoluted solution for the arrows made from 'less than' signs and hyphens.  (The ones with 'greater than' signs don't seem to be causing me problems.)

Type in the code for a 'less than' sign:

    & l t ;

    (except don't put spaces in)

Then type a hyphen right after it (with or without a space between, doesn't matter).  When you preview your message, it will still look funny, but when you post it, everything should come out right.

If Daneane The Tech Goddess has a more elegant solution, I'll be happy to see it.

I invited all the old smilies to come over and pose for a group photo. Big Grin If you want to use one of 'em, just right click on it and copy, then paste it into your message.

    Question fer yous

I'm wondering about how everyone uses smilies.  The old board replaced most keyboard smilies (like when you types the characters: ";)" ) and such with images.  Is that how you would use them?  Or would you pick them from the pikture of them?

    more examples here

I'm wondering because if you are used to typing them, that might be an important element to consider.  Like which particular smilie is preferred for the keystroke ";)".

Confused [8-)] Re: Question fer yous

I like both options, Daneane.  I often used to type in the smilies I used most frequently, but I appreciated being able to click on a less-often used emoticon in the gallery.

As far as keystrokes are concerned, fewer is better.  I'd rather type ;) than ;-).  (I know you didn't ask that, but I thought I'd mention it.)

Incidentally, I find the current emoticon gallery very slow to load, so I'm already beginning to type in some of the smilies I like.  For example, I have Beer and Pizza memorized.  Hmm, I wonder why that would be? Huh?

    Re: Question fer yous

Thanks for posting that link, BTW.  I couldn't figure out how {mo} was a "moon."  Confused  According to that page, it's MONEY!!  Yeah, it definitely looks more like coins than a lunar body.

I wonder why we got a dog emoticon but no cat emoticon.  Schwa_Cat is not amused!

I wonder about that too...like are the keystrokes supposed to be universal?  Maybe both version to the same smilie?

This stuff seems to get pretty involved.  So many smilies and abbreviations.

I never understood "thx" as a way to say thanks.  How grateful can you be if you can't even type the "anks"?

    html weirdness

I mentioned this a bit here .  It seems to be pretty problematic.  Like if I use the ascii characters for the code brackets, it looks okay in preview, sometimes even in a post, but sometimes wigs.  I think the editing features may be eating themselves or something.  A bug in there somewhere.  I'd guess it's getting fed into the database correctly, but when drawn back from the database it is getting run through the checkers again which are editing out the HTML tags it sees leading to incorrect displays.

I always get hung up on this in PHP.  There are a lot of stages, rules and views to take into consideration.  Like when a post is first entered, its raw.  So there are rules that go through and take out evil stuff and feed clean, safe and correct code into the database.  But when you pull it back out, you have to make it for humans again.  And for humans in different views.  The view that includes secret codes, the view just for reading, the view for the database.  Gets pretty difficult when you add in all the other stuff this board does and the amount of rules, data, posts and members.

I'm glad BR has some super genius in there dealing with this stuff.

I'd rather just play with the different font colors options.

    Geeked [8-|] Re: html weirdness

    Thx, dg! Devil

I have resigned myself to checking weird characters/codes/tags by sending myself emails so I can view the results.  Beats talking to other humans some days. Wink

    Re: html weirdness

Yes, this board can be very sensitive when it comes to using certain symbols that could be mistaken (by a computer) for some sort of code. Of course, sometimes you can use those same symbols and it's fine. It's moody that way.

Also, if you ever think that your post has been edited, click on the "Edit" button. If it has been edited, the edit date and time, as well as the name of the editor will appear down in the "Edit Notes." There may also be a note there from the editor as well.

    Lindsay
