    Re: Brock Zeman News

Good Friday is on April 6th this year. Unfortunately it looks like Brock will be in the Soo that day! Hey, I'll keep an eye out for some good shows that weekend and even if there's none, we should still get together!!!

    Carrington, collect 'em all!!!

OK, so that was painful...not listening to all 4 Brock CDs in a row! Heavens no!....Trying to decide which one to recommend that you buy first, Cathy (and everyone else interested!)! And I would have been here sooner, but I popped Serena in after Brock & I just can't type, think & sing out loud at the same time....well, I can, but I'd make a mess of things!!! So Serena's just finishing, I have goosebumps again & I'm here to try & make a Brock suggestion.

Hmmm, I think I would buy Brock Zeman & the Dirty Hands first. There are songs on there that I wouldn't want to be without (not unlike all the other cds!) like Sweet Charlotte, Amanda, Danny's Song, Breanna Harrison, Blood of Christ Blues, Nothing on the Radio, Another Song....um, you get the idea.

But if you could get two right now, I think I'd go for Cold Winter Comes Back, as well.

Then, I'd probably get Welcome Home Ivy Jane, but I really love Songs From the Mud, just as much.

So, if you must stagger your purchases out a bit, buy them in pairs! That of course, leaves the fifth one, the Bourbon Sessions to be ordered Wednesday! Ha! Wink (I don't have it yet, I'm going to get it at a House Concert in April....Shoot! that reminds me...I haven't RSVP'd to that yet! ACK! Tongue Tied

You can order directly from Brock or from Busted Flat Records, but Busted Flat uses PayPal. www.brockzeman.com

    Hi, Brian

The first one is CWCB, right? I'm really torn between it & DH, that's why I suggested Cathy just get them both.

I can't wait to get the Bourbon Sessions! I see that Ridin' on the Rims is on it, one of my favourites! Is it basically a Live CD. I think the description says they called it that because they shot back some Jim Beam & recorded the songs?

I'm going to call this little music store that is just outside of Stratford and see if they carry any of Brock's music. He prides himsefl on   being very supportive of our home grown talent. He even has my brother-in-laws music!! So, I'm thinking that he may have Brock!!

Yep, leftbrain, we're going to the House Concert in Sarnia. Our second time seeing Brock at this 'venue'.

Some House Concert hosts are open to people attending other than friends/family if they have space, but I don't know how you would contact the Fergus people other than emailing Brock?

Just in case anyone missed this article in EXCLAIM! in Feb. issue

Here is link for picture; http://www.exclaim.ca/musicreviews/generalreview.aspx?csid2=852&fid1=23311&csid1=107

Brock Zeman & the Dirty Hands
    Welcome Home Ivy Jane

    By David McPherson

Where was this troubadour hiding? As someone well versed in this country’s roots scene, this was the first time I had heard of the Wakefield, QC-based song-slinger. Zeman, however, who combines the rich, deep-in-the-well vocals of Steve Earle with the poetic storytelling of Townes Van Zandt, is no newcomer. This is his fourth release in four years and another disc, recorded with Dan Walsh, is due soon. While he’s physically located in Canada, his soul resides with Texas tellers of song and their brethren. By exploring themes that mine a time and place far away, yet so near, that are at once dark, brooding reflections and life-affirming celebrations, Zeman paints vignettes that everyone can relate to. Produced by veteran country rocker Keith Glass (Prairie Oyster), Zeman gathered a band with all the chops to fill out the melodies of these 14 tracks and add a rich layer of instrumentation that complements his tear-stained tales. With the backing of Kitchener-Waterloo indie label Busted Flat, hopefully Zeman’s words and music will now get heard by more of the masses. This is a songwriter worth hearing over and over again.

Welcome Home Ivy Jane feels like the narrative for a classic Western. Do you feel you would have felt more comfortable in another era? I’ve been told that I should have been born either in Texas or 50 years ago. I’m influenced a lot by those old mountain ballads. I like the simplicity of the music and the dark brooding element of the lyrics. I also listen to a lot of Morricone from all the spaghetti westerns.

What is it about train travel that inspires so many songwriters? I think everybody has a thing for trains. Steel, coal, steam, the sound of the whistle, hobos, etc., there’s just so much raw material to work with and everyone in the world can relate. Plus, it’s just way cooler to have a train in a song than an airplane, apologies to John Denver, but it just is.

I understand you’ve already recorded another album’s worth of songs. Dan Walsh and I were doing a little tour and had a couple days off so we went back to his place and started recording. We got about five songs in before we realised we had something. We recorded around 20 songs and kept 12. It’s going to be a stripped-down record [with] a little dobro and lead guitar here and there to add some colour, and some back-up vocals but overall, [it’ll be] very sparse. The album is called The Bourbon Sessions and will be out in late February in time for our Canadian Tour. (Busted Flat)

    Re: More Brock Zeman News

So, I was waiting to come back here & talk about our wonderful House Concert experience after I loaded my pics into a ClubPhoto Album! When I finally got around to doing that, imagine my shock to discover that ClubPhoto has shut down with absolutely no warning to anyone!!! I am praying that I still may be able to retrieve all my existing albums. I do have all the pics still, but not organized & captioned like I did in ClubPhoto! Damn!!

But, back to Brock! I was going to let the photos do my talking for me & I'll probably post some later (PhotoBucket wasn't working well for me today! ARGH!). Anyway....

We were wonderfully pleased to learn that Joe Forster was asked to do an opening set & as always we thoroughly enjoyed Joe's tunes & the crowd was very receptive. Still waitin' on that CD, Joe! Wink

Brock, Dan Walsh & Diamond Dave Russell on stand-up bass then took over & we were completely entertained. I didn't write down a setlist (never do!) but we heard old favourites, some new songs from the latest CD the Bourbon Sessions & a few tunes from a future Carnival-themed project!

I felt a little guilty when Jack won the door prize, a copy of the Bourbon Sessions, since I was planning on buying it anyway!

I still say, "Collect 'em all!", BUT if you can only get one right now, get the Bourbon Sessions. I just love it!! Great new tunes, plus a new version of one of my favourites, Ridin' On The Rims, that is just beautiful. Also a traditional song called The Cuckoo that I can't get enough of!

Hopefully, I'll be back with some pics soon!

It was indeed a great night. Brock and Dan were again such a treat and the addition of Diamond Dave was great. Look forward to your pictures Deb. We too have a few pictures, of both the concert and after hours jam and a great picture of you and John which I will email to you. Never been to a kitchen party with a stand up base before but sure would like to again!

Sarnia house concerts are definitely on our list of favourite things!
