    Bluegirl:

Busking can be the bottom rung of the entertainment industry, and some of the most famous groups and superstars started their careers as buskers. Examples include the Cirque Du Soleil, Stomp, Bob Hope, George Burns, Rod Stewart, Dolly Parton, Eric Clapton, Simon and Garfunkel, Jimmy Buffett, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Pierce Brosnan, Robin Williams, Jason Alexander, Beck, and Joni Mitchell.

I'd like to add to that list Richard Underhill.  He used to busk in front of my apartment building on Yonge Street (near College), some 23 years ago.

Hey there Jules... busking is now such an acceptable art form, that Toronto has a busking festival every year.  This year's festival took place in late August.  Even though it's done, check out what was going on:  http://www.torontobuskerfest.com/

As well, the TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) has buskers in the subway.  They have to audition though.  Some of them, as you know Wink, are quite good.  More and more of them have CDs for sale.  Years ago, I bought a cassette from John Borra at the Bathurst station.
