I sincerely apologize if my comments offended fans of Hedley, Three Days Grace and Nickelback.

I also sincerely apologize if I offended anyone with pimples. I too was once a pimply faced sales person so I understand how acne can make one very self-conscious.

Please accept my apologies and if you don't I will understand. My intention was never to hurt anyone personally, but words can be hurtful so seeing that my words offended and were hurtful to people who read them and who will read them, I am profoundly sorry.

Speaking of kids and their taste in music, I must admit that I'm glad my son has moved past his screamo stage and is now listening to 80's stuff! YES, you read right! He's into 80's music! LOL!

Um...not to make you feel bad, but for his generation they call that "oldies" music.

    Re: Top Albums of '07!

I saw Three Days Grace open for Velvet Revolver. Longest 45 minutes of my life! God, I hated them! Nickelback's songs are generally good, but I can't tell the difference between a lot of them. It seems a lot of other bands strive to sound like them, too, which only makes things worse. They are cheap imitations.

Interesting that I have not yet seen anyone mention Bruce Springsteen's "Magic" or the Foo Fighters "Echoes, Silence, Patience, Grace", two of the outstanding albums of 2007! Both received multiple nominations for Grammys (for whatever that's worth!).

    Re: Top Albums of '07!

    Peter:

Oh, praise Jesus! I've finally hit middle age. Prior to your listing them yBS, I had never heard of Billy Talent, Three Days Grace, and Hedley. Of course being the inquisitive music fan that I am, I had to Google and Wikipedia all three. Nice to know that they are Canadians. I listened to some Billy Talent and sure 'nuff, it is the same crap that those young pimply faced sales persons play every time I go into F.Y.E. record store here and what I heard every time I went into Tower Records. Speed metal, agression music, industrial, whatever you call it, that type of hard-core post punk emo "racing" style noise is not what I call music. That these bands won a ton of Junos and were big on Canadian idol or whatever doesn't impress me.

I can't believe that after 35 years I am echoing the words of my parents when they said to me as I was playing The Beatles, Bob Dylan and particularly The Rolling Stones to "turn that crappy noise down". Of course I did lower the volume a notch, but I still played 'em and sang along to 'em because they were my generation's bands and they were something that I could tangibly focus on that was not of my parent's world...a world that I had to rebel against. You, yBS have to rebel against your parent's world...that being the world that I and my generation of aging Baby Boomers have handed to you as messed up as it is, and you choose to grab onto the bands that emit the most obnoxious noises (to my aging ears anyway) so that I will hear your rebellion lound and clear. I'm glad you can get the opportunity to rebel as I once did and as we all must in the rite of passages and growth from teenager to adult.

Go ahead and enjoy your Billy Talent, Nickelback, etc. for you are young but once. A word of advice from this old fogey though. I have probably listened more music of so many different bands and styles for much longer a period of time than you have, and what impresses me most is whether a musician has mastery of his/her instrument of choice (guitar, drums, trumpet, organ, saxophone) and whether that musician has something/anything to say. That's why I like Blue Rodeo. They are all skilled musicians and they have something to say. They may not be the most popular band in the world, and they are virtually unknown in the United States, but they can make music that doesn't make me want to run screaming away from my stereo to find the nearest toilet to throw up in. But you wanna know something? We old fogeys could raunch it up in our younger years as well and I have two suggestions for you if you are serious about expanding your mind and experiencing different sounds.

Listen to "Raw Power" by Iggy Pop and the Stooges very loud and let me know what you think. Hear where Nickelback and Billy Talent may have gotten some of their inspiration?

And if you really want to hear something that will completely blow your mind, seek out and play from start to finish all in one sitting, "Trout Mask Replica" by Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band. If you can dig the good Captain (Don Van Vliet), then I think there just might be some hope for you and you youngsters after all! Happy or unhappy listening as the case may be...Cool

I understand how Three Days Grace might be hard to take for people who have listened to genres such as Blue Rodeo for so long (not meaning to be insulting).

As for saying that the older bands have something to say, well in my opinion Billy Talent has some of the most meaningful lyrics of the modern day bands! Fallen Leaves is about the drugs in Vancouver, Burn the Evidence is about someone who was controlled by his parents all his life, Covered in Cowardice is about people who always talk behind your band and never say anything to your face, Where is the Line is about how fashion controls everything maybe a little too much, etc. (And besides that I think Ian D'Sa has great guitar skills! I can hardly play any of their songs at this point).

Another thing about modern bands is you can't just look them up and listen to the intro go 'gross!' and turn it off. It took me probably about three times going through the Billy Talent songs to get used to the odd style. A couple of the songs I didn't think I ever would like and now I love them.

And as for you having more years of music experiance then me... My parents love both older music (they got me into Blue Rodeo, the Eagles, Dire Straits etc.) and they love all the stuff that I have, such as the 'crappy' Three Days Grace and Billy Talent.

I'd suggest looking up 'Valentine's Day' by Linkin Park, 'Pins and Needles' by Billy Talent, 'Never Too Late' by Three Days Grace and 'Savin' Me' by Nickelback, if you can listen to those ones all the way through a few times then there's still hope for you oldies! lol Geeked (those are their 'quieter' songs, it'd be hard not to like them lol). There's a good Hedley song that I keep seeing on tv but I don't know the name...

I appreciate your input and hope I don't too rude at times, lol.Wink

    Hi There, my name's Dem...

I've been reading this thread for awhile now and understand fully that this all comes down to personal opinion.  In read some of the statements made, one might think that music "Ought" to be judged on how much one enjoys a song having heard it only the once.

I, personally, am a big fan of said bands, such as Billy Talent, Three Days Grace and Nickelback - I had not in any means, however, come to even like their music for weeks after hearing them.  In this case, as well as many others, though, I have come to see and hear past the obnoxious screaming and loud ways of Billy Talent and find myself enthralled  by their amazingly honest and open lyrics - as well as Ian D'sa's Stunning and rediculous fingerwork in so many of their tracks.

I would have to implore to those of you whom do not agree, to sit down and take a few minutes out of your day to stop and  truly listen to what said bands are all about.

     ~Dem

Eighties music? Sounds like my b.d. (boyfriend dearest), whose iPod contains so much 80s stuff that it should be wearing leg warmers and glitter-moussed hair. Stick out tongue *His* favourite acts are Duran Duran and Pet Shop Boys, but I love him anyway. Wink

My top albums of 2007, with the disclaimer that this is my personal opinion and I am by no means authoritative, are as follows:

    - Small Miracles (naturally). Favourite tracks: "Blue House" and "Mystic River". The latter was stuck in my head for a week after I bought the album.

    - New Seasons, because the Sadies are cool. Favourite tracks: "Anna Leigh" and "The Trial". The whole album is just so lush and wonderful.

    - Thumbelina's One Night Stand, by Melissa McClelland. Seriously, I had this one in my computer for weeks after I bought it. Yes, it was released last year, but I *bought* it this year, so there. Wink On this one I like "Goodbye to You" and "Oh, Love!".

    - Operation: Jet Set! and Sputnik A-Go-Go, by The Reverb Syndicate. They are an Ottawa band that does instrumental surf rock, and their raison d'être is to write soundtracks to spy films that don't exist. Sixties references feature prominently: song titles include "I Am the New Number Two", "Zis is KAOS!" and "Escape from The Village". Jet Set is their first album, released last year but bought by me this year, and it also contains my favourite song of theirs, "On to Checkpoint Bravo". Sputnik is their second and newest album, and it's got a space kind of theme. Both albums rock, and the band as people are great guys, lots of fun to hang out with. For both reasons I am happy to do shameless promotion for them whenever I can. Wink

I also received Feist's latest, The Reminder, for Christmas, which is quite excellent but is not on my Top Five or whatever because I haven't had as much time to appreciate it yet. That being said, the section of the CD containing "My Moon My Man" will likely be worn out completely because I play it so much. Stick out tongue
