I heard that commercial the other day and no one believed me it was Blue Rodeo! Out of all the people in Stratford who arnt on this sight, I know a BR song better than them to hear it! lol. I remember when I fist got it... I took out the lyrics,  popped it into the computer, and as usual, "So Far Away" was the first song. I knew just even before the words started that Blue Rodeo is always gettin better!
Summer Girls they sure are fun, get so Golden in the sun that they could block out any other thought.

I think the song is a great fit.  Feels just like a train.Smile

Re: So Far Away on VIA

I think it can be a good thing when an artist's song is used to promote something - provided that what they are promoting is something they believe in personally.  There's nothing wrong with VIA Rail.  Now that they have those great rates along the corridor, I've taken the train several times back and forth to Ottawa in the past year.  It's cheaper than the bus, and way more comfortable.

Especially in Canada, most musicians don't make a lot of money, so in my opinion, if they can sell their music to promote something, what's wrong with that?  It gives them more exposure.  As long as the ads are tasteful, and the music is fitting...

So good for Greg and Blue Rodeo, having such a great song chosen for a commercial.  I know, they hardly need more exposure in Canada, and they are already a commercial success, but hey, if it helps them retire before they are 95, helps Jim put his kids through college, what's wrong with that?  I wish that same success on other Canadian artists such as the Sadies or Luke Doucet or Justin Rutledge or... well, you get the idea.

But I do get where Schwa_guy is coming from.  An artist who sells his music to promote something so that a private enterprise can get rich could very well be construed as "selling out".

On the other hand, though, some songwriters sell their music to ad agencies for a living.  One of my friends, who used to have a successful band, does just that now to supplement his income.  He got sick of performing in front of people who treated him like a television set (ie, wouldn't shut up while he was singing).  The only difference is that the original concept behind these artists' jingles is specifically geared towards what the ad agency needs, as opposed to a songwriter writing a song for his own purposes and having an ad agency pick it up to promote something related to the song.

You can see the ad on the Canadian Advertising Club website...

    http://www.canadianadvertisingclub.com/article.aspx?id=26600

You can even vote your opinion on the ad.  I don't think the vote means anything, except for how much you like the ad.  Right now, it's almost 50% at mediocre and about 39% at good.   I think it's a really nicely done commercial, Blue Rodeo aside.  The song just makes it all that much better.

Re: So Far Away on VIA

What???  According to the poll, 43.96% voted the ad mediocre!  C'mon!  It must be the visuals they are commenting on, because it can't be the music!  I really only paid attention to the ad because I was attracted hearing the Blue Rodeo song!
I carry with me the memory of a field I once knew, of a night so full of stars that I was left humbled by it's endless beauty. I know that whatever the cost, life is worth living. So bring it on...I can take it.

I'll go and vote again!! Wink

I also think it's great because you can read the song as a commentary on VIA's delayed arrivals. Think about it...

"I don't have all of the time in the world" -- We were supposed to be in Toronto by 4:00, it's 5:30 and we're still only at Kingston!

"but all of the time that I have, it is yours" -- Because when you're stuck on the train, you're stuck and you're not moving till the problem is solved.

Yes, I love VIA Rail, but I'll still make fun of it when it has delays. Stick out tongue

Re: So Far Away on VIA

Well, CBC has this commercial now as well...we've seen it during commercial breaks for the News at Six for the past five weeknights. I'm not complaining... Wink But it has gotten to the point where, if "So Far Away" comes up in my iTunes shuffle, boyfriend dearest will ask if I have the TV on. Stick out tongue
