Stand In the Fire: Warren Zevon's Awesome Live Album Bring Reissued by Rhino

This one I can wholly reccommend. The 1980 live record, "Stand In the Fire" by Warren Zevon, long out of print and available only on Japanese import compact discs, is finally being reissued by Rhino Records with a scheduled release date of March 27, 2007. I bought this record on cassette back in the early 1990s and after repeated listens, I can say that this puppy lives up to it's reputation as one of the best live rock records ever. Recorded at the Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles in 1981 (yeah, weird that it was released originally in 1980 on Elektra/Asylum Records...can't quite figure that one out, yet), this record captures Zevon and band in a raucous and wildly joyful mood as they tear through Zevon's hits like "Werewolves of London", "Lawyers, Guns and Money" and the song he co-wrote with Bruce Springsteen, "Jeannie Needs A Shooter".

Rhino's blurb on their web site about the remastered and expanded album adds some interesting tidbits:

Recorded at L.A.'s Roxy theatre in 1981, this long-out-of-print live album features the two unforgettable original songs Zevon debuted on that year's tour, "The Sin" and "Stand In The Fire." Also includes searing versions of "Lawyers, Guns And Money," "Werewolves Of London," "Poor, Poor Pitiful Me," "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead," "Mohammed's Radio," and "Jeannie Needs A Shooter" (a co-write with Bruce Springsteen) among other stellar performances. Four previously unreleased cuts include "Johnny Strikes Up The Band," "Frank And Jesse James," and "Hasten Down The Wind." New liner notes feature an essay by Rolling Stone senior writer David Fricke.

I never got to see Zevon in concert and in his later years, his shows were not always up to par, but on this one back in the day, and on his home turf, he really kicked out the jams. As an added bonus, Rhino is also re-issuing Zevon's 1982 studio disc, "The Envoy" on March 27th. Pretty decent songs on that one too. But if you want to get just one and experience the feeling of a live Zevon show, by all means get "Stand in the Fire". Music
