    Montreal recovers

I was just sickened last night when I watched the news & saw there was some rioting after the hockey game last night.  As someone who was in the crowd in Vancouver when things turned into a riot years ago after the Canucks lost I well remember how sad it was to see my city with windows broken etc.  It is so sad that a few idiots always want to reck things for true fans.

I hope things get back to normal as soon as possible for Montrealers.

Of all the things that can make a city look bad, I am always amazed at the stupidity of sports fans. And in defense of my own city which takes a lot of crap we have never had violence after a team one a major sports title. Ticker tape parades are always causes for celebrations and not looting.

Now accuse the police of sticking a plunger up your A$$ and you're gonna have one hell of a riot on your hands.

I agree with you....its shameful behaviour....and then down the road others have to suffer for the misdeeds of those before them.

I can't remember when or which game it was, but in Buffalo years ago, fans jumped on the field and tore down a goal post...not sure what the point was...but a lot of rules got changed at that stadium afterwards and made things much more strict for the rest of the fans.

People can get downright crazy passionate about their particular sport or team. I've really never seen people react to other things in that way.

    Re: Montreal recovers

There was at least 22,000 hockey fans at the Bell Centre last night who were ecstatic about Montreal's win over Boston Big Smile.  After all, it was much more difficult to eliminate the Bruins than was originally expected!  Yet a handful of very stupid kids make our city look bad because images of the riot have been broadcasted all over the country and all over the world.  Why is it that people cannot celebrate with pride and joy like we used to in the '70's - I used to go to the Stanley Cup parade back then with my friends and nothing of the sort would ever happen. I mean, I get that hockey is not like bowling or golf; it's a contact sport and there is an element of violence in it. I know that times have changed and that the mental age of a crowd is not very high, and although not all kids are like that (thank God!), this is the generation that watch "Jackass" and for some of them, acting stupid is seen as being cool!  Don't ask me why because I just don't get it.

I think the media in Montreal also have a role to play in this.  They were sort of hinting all day that some kind of vandalism could happen after the game (whether the Habs win or lose).   And I wish they stopped showing the same reports over and over again on TV as it is giving these idiots way too much attention.

But this is not going to stop the real fans.  I've seen more people around town with a smile on their face since the Habs have made the playoffs and hockey fever is definitely not going away Smile!

    Re: Montreal recovers

I'm not sure that the situation that occured last Monday in Montreal was particular to a generation. Back in 1957 (or approx. that year) there was a serious riot after a hockey game in Montreal following a decision regarding the Rocket.

I do believe that the sport and the excitement that everyone (media, owners, fans etc...) builds up over the season encourages this type of character. I'm amazed at how much people drink, sometimes before the game has even started. Many people are commenting on how the Montreal hockey crowd is the loudest crowd they've participated in (i.e. journalists, Al Gore etc...) It can be a great experience but no one can go straight to bed after such an experience.

Currently, the halls are filled with fans, some chanting, some screaming at each other at how the other team sucks! Security sometimes has to separate fans because of their passion.

Approx. 20 years ago I went to Philadelphia for a 4-day baseball trip with the Expos. My friend bent down to pick up her drink from the floor, and a huge glump of mustard passed her and fell on the fan in front of us. She was upset at us until I told her that it was her own city's fans that aimed for my friend but got her instead. Since some of our guys got in a situation earlier that night, we had to wait until the whole stadium was emptied before we were allowed to leave the game.

I would love to go to another baseball game such as in New York or Boston but I've heard these fans are the most passionate (trying to be diplomatic)....to scarry!

According to the local news tonight, 45 people have been arrested since last Monday night's post hockey game riot, with more to come.

This was thanks to many hockey FANS who have provided camera/video pictures of the culprits in action. Some admitted they were disappointed with what happened and wanted to be sure that their game and city didn't experience that again anytime soon.

I'm pleased to announce that the street's around the Bell Centre after a game have since been riot free. I just hope the Habs return to winning games.Yes
