Re: NFL/CFL 2004/2005/2006
Talking about touchdown celebrations, Gobo, I'm sure that Calgary bobsled celebration couldn't have gone down too well in Montreal a few weeks ago...I wasn't overly impressed with their "relay" celebration after one touchdown last night in Edmonton or their "100 m dash" - both of which they ran on the track at Commonwealth. Nice to see the Eskies get the last laugh on them with those two last second touchdowns! Of course, the Argonauts have been guilty of the odd choreographed touchdown celebrations as well - the worst of course being R. Jay Soward and the bag of popcorn in the Eastern Final against Montreal. I was not at all impressed with that, especially since it was still early in the game and we were only up 14-0 at the time - honestly, after that bit of showboating, I felt that if Montreal ended up coming back to win the game (which of course they did) then we would have deserved the loss. I did, however, enjoy Arland Bruce's "putt" of the football with the end zone pylon in last week's game vs. Hamilton! Hehehe Here's hoping for a good game today. As much as I think the Argos will pretty much run away with it - and run up the scoreboard in the process - I'm still nervous about the game. I mean, if any team has the motivation, it's gotta be those hated ***-Cats from Hamilton. Apparently their own fan club has even decided not to make the trip up the QEW for the game this afternoon - and of course, not to mention getting embarrassed on their own turf on Labour Day - could be alot of motivation for the ***-Cats if they can channel it and turn it into a win - but hopefully not!

Re: NFL/CFL 2004/2005/2006
Yeah, see what you mean, B.E.D. and if you have any head magic, I'd make sure the Argos don't get too complacent given their recent successes. But, if I know Pinball at all, I'd say that he's be saying roughly the same thing to his charges. Anyway, games on in about an hour. won't be able to watch it as I'll be visiting someone in the hospital by then. So, you're on your own, not that you need my help, eh buddy? Go Argos...but only so far, eh? hehehe.
To be or not to be is NOT the question! Rather, is it your will to be here, or to be elsewhere?

Finally, I'm able to log into the new boards after weeks of trying. I had all but given up. Geoff what do you think of the Patriots trading Deion Branch?

Re: NFL/CFL 2004/2005/2006
Good to see you back Derek! I, like most of "Patriot Nation" wish this didn't have to happen, but it did. I've never liked it when athletes don't honour there contracts and hold out for more money, etc. Let's face it, can we hold out from our jobs? Hell no, we'd get fired. The 1st round draft pick will be great to have for next year, but that's next year. I think last sunday's game against Buffalo was the "worst" it will get with the play of the WR's. I think it's been a adjustment period for Brady without Branch and Givens but I'm very sure (not just saying this as a die-hard fan) things will turn around but only time will tell. It was supposed to be the end of the world and the Pats were finished when Lawyer Milloy was released just before the 2003 season, look how that one ended Yikes, what happened to the Pack on sunday?

Re: NFL/CFL 2004/2005/2006
No blocking, a key special teams turnover, and questionable play-calling happened to the Packers. The Bears are a good team on defense. Offensively though they really didn't do much other than the one long pass play. Their other TD was on a punt return, and besides that the Packers defense held them to field goals even when faced with a short field. But when Favre is 5-for-5 passing in the first half and they're behind 16-0, there's obviously a disconnect somewhere. At one point in the first half Grossman was 12-for-16 and Favre was 2-for-2. And then the media is stupid enough to do their usual "oh my God, Brett Favre is falling apart" idiocy. I don't blame him for throwing interceptions when they're behind by 20some points late in the game. You have to take risks at that point, just hoping you can somehow make things happen. I'd really like to know how they would like him to improve on his 5-for-5 first half, while the team was falling behind. But Favre's the big name that people know and want to read about, sensationalizing every piece of adversity he faces is a profitable business for them.

Re: NFL/CFL 2004/2005/2006
It's amazing how much coverage Favre gets in the media. Especially this past off-season with the "will he or won't he" with regards to retirement. Personally I think that the sports media always likes to put there own "spin" on some stories and fans sometimes will take it as the word. I've read stories about how the Pats are doomed now with Branch gone. Branch was just one person on the time. Does he play QB, cornernback? Nope. (That's Troy Brown, hahaha). Yesterday on the Pats on-line radio show yesterday, one of the hosts made a great point. Some writers will hear a story, then go ahead and write about it based on hearing not too much about it. I'm curious to hear your thoughts Derek, if I remember correctly, you write for a newspaper.

Re: NFL/CFL 2004/2005/2006
I did until today, anyway. Looks like there's a good chance that tomorrow's issue will be the last, and then we fold, unless there's a major breakthrough. We gave it a good run for two years but it's hard to make money selling a free newspaper (it's virtually entirely advertising-based revenue). So starting tomorrow I'm most likely unemployed. But I do have a column for that issue kind of along the same lines as what I just posted about Favre. I don't have it handy right now but when I get a chance I'll share it.

Re: NFL/CFL 2004/2005/2006
First and foremost, how about those Pats at 2-0!!! The team that was supposed to be sinking continues to find ways to win in "Patriot Style" (ie-making me sweat it out till the end). A improved performance from the WR's (it was great to see Chad Jackson finally play).

Re: NFL/CFL 2004/2005/2006
Geoff I want to know where you continually find all these people supposedly bashing the Patriots. I haven't seen them, other than to wonder what the offense will do to offset the loss of Branch. But having said that realize the Patriots haven't really played anyone yet. And they will go to Green Bay to play no one later this season. Well, I take that back. They will go to Green Bay to play 4 guys on offense, and 4 guys on defense. So 4/11ths of "someone".

Re: NFL/CFL 2004/2005/2006
Look no further than the countdown shows, NFL Network and the columnists on si.com, espn.com, foxsports.com, etc. Doesn't bother me at all, I've always found it interesting to read about it, watch it. Teams like the Dolphins and Panthers that were supposed to be playing superb are a struggling 0-2. When it really gets broken down, it's a matter of how many wins you have.

Re: NFL/CFL 2004/2005/2006
Just like all the media morons going on and on about Favre, you can't take it all too seriously because they're just pushing the "shocking" stories that will get people riled up. I don't think most people think the Patriots are "sinking" by any means. Speaking of the Patriots though, pretty pathetic field conditions there tonight, apparently thanks to the soccer team that plays there. Just cost New England 3 points too.

Re: NFL/CFL 2004/2005/2006
I've always found that a lot of people take what they read or see as "the word" and don't really try formulate there own opinion. Although I love reading some of the e-mails people will send after the various "power rankings" get released. Always good for a laugh! Don't forget about the Rolling Stones concert last wednesday. You's think they'd of tried to schedule the concert during the bye week. No matter though, a poor performance last night and if they don't play better this sunday, the Bengals will blow them out. When Belichick himself said in the post game press conference that they got out-coached and out played, you know there's going to be lots of work done this week to improve.

Re: NFL/CFL 2004/2005/2006
Something tells me your not going to be bothered by the Packers releasing Ahmad Carrollm eh Derek? GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) - A day after two of his errors helped fuel a Philadelphia Eagles victory, former first-round draft pick Ahmad Carroll was released by the Green Bay Packers.
Packers general manager Ted Thompson said Tuesday the team released the cornerback who was drafted in the first round in 2004.In the Eagles'
31-9 win Monday night in Philadelphia, Carroll's blown coverage led to
a touchdown that put Philadelphia ahead 17-9, and a costly penalty by
him led to another. Carroll played 34 games in four seasons and
started 28 of them. He had 104 tackles, 95 solo, three interceptions,
three sacks, 26 passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble
recovery.

Re: NFL/CFL 2004/2005/2006
I've been waiting for this day for a LONG time. Truly "addition by subtraction". The only thing that bothers me is I have to find a new idea for a sports column by tomorrow, because I had been all set to write about how the Packers needed to get rid of Carroll :) Speaking of tomorrow, the plan is to go to the Twins-A's playoff game up at the Dome. Boof Bonser on the mound for the home team, against Esteban Loaiza. If all this works out it's going to be quite a week for me with sports: saw the Twins win the division on Sunday vs. the White Sox, tomorrow heading back to the Metrodome for Twins-A's, then Eau Claire Homecoming on Saturday, then heading to Lambeau on Sunday for Packers-Rams. Add in some high school tennis and volleyball on Thursday and high school football on Friday, and the only reason I didn't go to a tennis meet on Monday or a volleyball game today was due to homework, pretty full week.
