Paradise [ip] Re: Questions About The New Board

I hope I caught everything. Answers in blue:

Occasionally the typing appears as vertical lines.  I continue to type anyway and eventually the lines snap into text.  - It looks like bar-code until it changes though...hope it's not just me lol.  This is a text editor thing. Ignore it for now. It will be fixed later this month.

Maybe I've missed this somewhere but I have two web addresses in my signature and I've tried using an HTML link but they still don't work.  Any suggestions? - If you're using normal HTML tags around the link, it should work fine (see my sig). I know Daneane has offered some other suggestions and feel free to try those out too. But so I've been fine using plain old HTML. If you keep having problems, PM me your links and I'll try to add them to your sig for you.

I have a question about the PM notification option. It seems that you can only temporarily apply these options. How long does this temporary application last? Or is there somewhere else that we're supposed to check to get email notifications? - This part of the screen is somewhat poorly laid out so I can understand your confusion (yesterday when I was trying to figure it out, it was also confusing me). The "Apply" button only applies to the filter & sort options and lasts for 15 minutes or until you exit the site. It doesn't apply to the send email part (which should send you an email whenever you receive a PM).

Why do I have to give a reason for deleting my own post? - This function is really more for mods/admin. Whenever one of your posts is deleted, you receive an email and in that email there will be a short blurb explaining why someone deleted your post. However, we can't only apply this function to mods/admin meaning that when you delete one of your posts, you also need to enter something. It doesn't have to be detailed or even a real sentence. A one-word (or even letter) answer is fine. Unless some sort of incident or problem (technical or otherwise) comes up, we never look at deleted posts.

Thanx, Lindsay. Do I understand correctly that we are automatically receiving email notifications of PMs then without checking any boxes anywhere? If so, I guess my email is just lagging sometimes.

Re: Questions About The New Board

OK, I just discovered something very frustrating and/or time-consuming. I was looking at Stacey's pictures (and there is a lot of them) and when I was finished, I found out that the link to Photobucket had not opened another window that I could just subsequently close. The only way to go back to the DB page was to press 'back' a zillion times thru ALL of the pictures or else close the window and re-enter and log-in to the BR DB.  I don't know if this happens with all links within the body of a post or just photo ones or if this is another of the many 'glitches' that seem to be occurring.

Another thing.........(yes, I'm finding it very frustrating navigating today)

When you go to any of the threads listed under 'My Posts', it takes you to the very first post in the thread so if there are several pages, you have to go to the last page, then to the end of the page. I would assume that the reason for putting these links there is so that one can go to those places where they have posted and check for responses. Therefore, a direct link to the end of the thread would be a lot more helpful!

    OK, back to the maze.......

    Hey Phyl,

You can set in your options to have post Ascending or Descending or vise versa.  I've set mine up now so the post are newest to oldest and then I just scroll back to the last one I read.

Thank you. That worked altho' now I'm going to have to wrap my mind around the idea of reading everything backwards so as to have it in the right order if that makes any sense.

Are you receiving the emails? It's quite possible that there is a few minutes delay between the time sometime sends you a PM and the time it shows up in your inbox.

FallenDownBlue - Your question about the photos, can you walk me through that? I'm not sure I understand what's happening. Also, if you don't want to have to log back in, click off the "Remember Me" box.

Re: Questions About The New Board

Lindsay, I do seem to be getting the email notifications, but sometimes there's a very long time (like hours) between when the PM was posted & when I receive notification. So I've gotten into the habit of checking the Inbox at the top of the DB.

Sonja & I are both having trouble finding where you paste in a website url so it is active (I hope that's the right terminology?Embarassed) Can someone point us in the right direction? Thanx.

Re: Questions About The New Board

Lindsay, it was in the Port Elgin photos thread that I noticed the problem. Normally when one clicks on a link within a post it opens a new window so that when you're done with it, you close it and you're back at your original one. In this case, I had clicked on the link to Stacey's photobucket site and looked thru all 100+ pics then realized that it wasn't a separate window so if I closed it, I'd be closing my whole IE connection and have to open it again and go back to the page on the DB that I was originally on OR if I just clicked 'back', it would take me back thru all 100+ pics. Obviously, I chose to close and re-open but even with my 'Remember Me' box on, it's still quite a few steps to get back to where I was.

Does that make sense now? Basically, I would just like the links within the threads to open a new window. I'm not sure if Sammie's last question is related to this or not.

Re: Questions About The New Board

No, Phyl, I think my question is different & I know others here have figured it out so it must be something I'm just overlooking.

You know how you include a link to another website in your post & it's highlighted...I can't find where to paste it in so that's it's highlighted.

Method 1 (this will show the actual URL):

    • Type or paste the URL into your message.
    • Hit ENTER at the end of the line to turn it into hypertext ("active").

    Example: http://www.google.ca/

Method 2 (this will show a link with a name you select):

    • Type any character.
    • Select it (highlight it).
    • Click on the 'link' icon on the toolbar (below B)
    • Type or paste the URL into the top field (Link URL) of the little window that opens.
    • Type the name you want to give the link into the bottom field (Title) of this same little window.
    • Click the Insert button.

    Example: Google

Does that help, Sammie and Sonja?

Re: Questions About The New Board

OK, I have the same thing happening with this google link. It opens within the same 'path' (? tech term) rather than a new window. Is there any way to post a url that opens separately? Interestingly tho', when I clicked on the link within my email notification of this post, it did open a new window.

The old board was set so that by default, all posted links opened a new window.  On the new board, you have the option to decide if you want same or new window.  It's an option just below where you insert a web address.

I think I prefer the old way.

As for the link when you got an e-mail notification, I think it opened a new window based on the settings of your e-mail client.

Speaking of e-mail notifications....whenever I click a link from there, it takes me to page one of the thread rather than the exact post it is notifying me of.  Would be much preferred if it would include an anchor with the post number so I got right to the post it is telling about.

Ditto on both counts for me, Daneane.  I have to keep remembering to right-click on a link if I want to open it in a new window.  And I'm notorious for forgetting things.  Embarassed

I really don't like the lack of anchors in some links.  It's a bit of a pain - no, make that really annoying having to move to the desired post manually.

Much as I like the appearance of the new board, it still has a lot of bugs to be worked out.
