    I'm all alone at work!

It's really creepy! I just got to work a little while ago and the place is deserted. There was another guy supposed to start at the same time as me but he's not here? I guess he must have called in sick. I wanted to call in sick so badly too but if I would have done that, I wouldn't get paid for yesterday... you have to work your scheduled shift before and after to get paid for the holiday. Roll Eyes

So anyway, I turned the TV on and am watching Much More Music. laugh I haven't received any calls so far. I wonder if it will stay dead like this for my whole shift.

I just took a bunch of Vicks Ny-Quil... can't stop coughing. It's going to be a pain trying to talk to the members with this cough. That Ny-Quil stuff is pretty gross eh? I stopped at Shopper's Drug Mart but there was a huge lineup so I had to leave... I would have been late for work...

Re: I'm all alone at work!

Geez, if there's nobody else there, you should have stayed in line at the Shoppers Drug Mart to get your Ny-Quil...I mean, who's gonna notice, right? Wink j/k

That sucks that you've got a bad cold...my cold's been pretty bad too, my head's still all plugged up. Thankfully my bad cold has been just about the worst I've had to deal with over the holidays, as my shingles haven't been so bad, since I caught it early on this time around and have been on medication for a week now. Smile I just wanna get rid of this damn cold!!! Frown

Anywho, hope you're not too bored there today! Take care!

All alone at work eh? Guess you have to come up with some really cool topics for the board.

BTW - what exactly is Boxing Day?

Re: I'm all alone at work!

Hey NYCBRFAN... I was chatting with my friend from Dallas last night... and I never realized that boxing day does not exist in the USA. I had no idea! I thought it was a worldwide thing. Basically boxing day is the day where you put everything back in boxes (well the stuff you don't want that is) and return them to the stores they came from. The malls have huge boxing day sales too... day after Christmas... they want to get rid of their stock I guess. Everyone knows to stay away from the malls on boxing day though... because the crowds are nuts. I never go.

So you're sick too BED? It sucks eh!!!! Yeah I was going to wait and take a chance that I wouldn't be late but it's all computerized so they would have known if I was late or not. Wink

Re: I'm all alone at work!

Wellllll... kinda sorta, but not exactly, Alli. My understanding of Boxing Day is that it started as a servants' holiday (since the servants had to work on Christmas Day to take care of the master's family's needs). I checked about.com, and here is a good explanation:
    quote:
In England, Boxing Day takes place on the day after Christmas. The name refers to the special boxes that were placed in churches at Christmas time hundreds of years ago to collect money to buy food for the poor. The church opened these boxes on Christmas Day and handed out their contents on the following day--December 26. In the 1700's, the Church ended this practice, but many poor people continued to collect money on this day by visiting the houses of the rich and asking for money. Another custom on this day was for servants to request money from their masters at Christmas. These gifts of money were kept in a pottery container. The container was broken on the day after Christmas, and the money was then distributed A similiar tradition that continues today involves workers who provide services throughout the year, such as the garbagemen, night watchmen, church workers and postal workers. This money gift, or "tip", is given to show appreciation to the workers.

    HAHAHA!! Big Grin laugh laugh

Did you really think that's what it meant Allison? Razz That's too funny!

    But i can see why most people who live in countries where it's recognized wouldn't even know what it was for;

..it's not really relevant in today's society, and here in Newfoundland anyway it's been traditionally a day to visit relatives, neighbours, friends and more relatives and get stumbling-drunk - uh, I mean - share some Christmas cheer!

But then, even that's changed a lot since I was a kid; some people these days have come to think it's not such a good idea to "stuff your face" full of hors d'oevres and Christmas cake and cookies, load up on booze, and then drive -or even walk!- from house to house.. to house! exclaim Don't know what's up with that...

    Happy Boxing Day!

By the way, is the day after Christmas observed as a holoday at all in the US? Does it have a name?

    Cheers

Actually, when I was little, I thought it was a day you were supposed to watch boxing matches on TV! Oh well, live and learn. Alli's interpretation makes more sense these days, that's for sure! Roll Eyes

Yeah, I'm still sick with this cold, Allison. Although, I took some Buckley's a little while ago and I'm actually starting to feel a little better! Yeah, it's true, that stuff DOES taste awful, but it works! Big Grin

Say, BED, have you ever thought of starring in one of the Buckley's commercials? They're using people right off the street in the current campaign. Have you seen the one with the older gentleman? He's a member of my congregation! And so far, he has made $1500 from that commercial! Cool

Re: I'm all alone at work!

The best part of Boxing Day for me is that it means that most of us get the day off (ok - unless you're in essential services or retail!). It's nice to have 2 days together (especially when it falls around the weekend). I used to brave the crowds on Boxing Day, but haven't for years since a lot of stores started "boxing week" sales (even before Christmas) and won't allow refunds or exchanges until after Boxing Day. I did go shopping this moring though for an hour or so - had to drive my son to work and decided to stop in since I had a good parking spot and it was only 8:00 and I was well ahead of the crowd. Got a few good really good deals too without aggravation and was home having coffee by 10! NYCBRFAN I guess you could equate shopping on Boxing Day to your sales the day after Thanksgiving -same idea. Smile
