I was gonna go with Four Strong Winds, but it's an Ian Tyson song and Neil has so many brilliant lyrics that I figure he deserves an example of his own! Heck, he has so many brilliant lyrics that there's still plenty to choose from after everything that's been posted here...

My favourite Neil song of all time is Ambulance Blues. I still get chills down my spine when I hear it, and I've heard it hundreds of times. It starts:

Back in the old folky days
The air was magic when we played.
The riverboat was rockin' in the rain
Midnight was the time for the raid.

(My favourite verse is:
I guess I'll call it sickness gone
It's hard to say the meaning of this song.
An ambulance can only go so fast
It's easy to get buried in the past
When you try to make a good thing last.)



And from a humourous point of view, how about Country Home?

I don't like to go down to the flats

I will never hear this song again and not think about the 4 young mounties that died in Alberta!! Watching Ian Tyson sing that at their funeral really touched me emotionally in a way that I would have never expected!!

One of my all-time favourites is "Long may you run". Most folks think its another "love gone wrong song". It"s actually about an old van Neil once owned.Hence the line:

(making refference to the old chrome bumpers)

I always liked this album but this song and the way it's sung reminds me of the Sadies for some reason.

Speaking of Neil Young's new cd ... were we speaking of that? Anyway, Prairie Harvest has been named "the last piece of a country-folk trilogy begun with the 1972 Harvest and 1992's Harvest Moon." I read an interview in the paper today about it and can't wait to pick it up. Classic Neil Young. I have heard "When God Made Me" at Live 8. That song alone is worth picking up the new one.
