    Ah Neil Young,,,,,

Someone and someone where down by the pond
lookin for something to plant in the lawn
out in the fields they were turmin' the soil
I'm sittin' here hoping this water will boil

    Love this tune

another one of my favs is really the first song I learned to play , he didn't write it but,,,,

Think I'll go out to Alberta
Weathers good there in the fall
I've got some friends that I can go working for
Still I wish you'd change your mind
If I ask you one more time

    or how 'bout

Well I dreamed I saw the Knights in armour comming
    sayin' something 'bout a Queen
There were peasants singing and drummers drumming
And the archer split the tree
"""A Steel stringed guitar and a little weed""

Re: Four favourite first lines of a Neil Young song

I was gonna go with Four Strong Winds, but it's an Ian Tyson song and Neil has so many brilliant lyrics that I figure he deserves an example of his own! Heck, he has so many brilliant lyrics that there's still plenty to choose from after everything that's been posted here...

My favourite Neil song of all time is Ambulance Blues. I still get chills down my spine when I hear it, and I've heard it hundreds of times. It starts:

Back in the old folky days
The air was magic when we played.
The riverboat was rockin' in the rain
Midnight was the time for the raid.

    (My favourite verse is:
I guess I'll call it sickness gone
It's hard to say the meaning of this song.
An ambulance can only go so fast
It's easy to get buried in the past
When you try to make a good thing last.)

And from a humourous point of view, how about Country Home?

I don't like to go down to the flats
    Cause I can't park on a hill
Instead of gettin' a rolling start,
I have to pay the bill!

Mine is from "Comes A Time":

You and I, we were captured

We took our souls and we flew away

We were right, we were giving

That's how we kept what we gave away.

Yep... I do believe in those words.
To be or not to be is NOT the question!

Rather, is it your will to be here, or to be elsewhere?

I will never hear this song again and not think about the 4 young mounties that died in Alberta!! Watching Ian Tyson sing that at their funeral really touched me emotionally in a way that I would have never expected!!

"Come a little bit closer, hear what I have to say,
Just like children sleeping, we can dream this night away,
But there's a full moon rising, let's go dancing in the light,
We know where the music's playing, let's go out and feel the night."

From the timeless classic 'Harvest Moon' -
I can never get enough of this song!

    ANOTHER GREAT ONE!!!

One of my all-time favourites is "Long may you run". Most folks think its another "love gone wrong song". It"s actually about an old van Neil once owned.Hence the line:
"Withyour chrome heart shining, in the sun"
(making refference to the old chrome bumpers)

Re: Four favourite first lines of a Neil Young song

I always liked this album but this song and the way it's sung reminds me of the Sadies for some reason.

He came dancing across the water
    With his galleons and guns.
    Looking for that new world
In that palace in the sun.

Re: Four favourite first lines of a Neil Young song

Speaking of Neil Young's new cd ... were we speaking of that? Anyway, Prairie Harvest has been named "the last piece of a country-folk trilogy begun with the 1972 Harvest and 1992's Harvest Moon." I read an interview in the paper today about it and can't wait to pick it up. Classic Neil Young. I have heard "When God Made Me" at Live 8. That song alone is worth picking up the new one.
"Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life."

Hopefully he'll do more in that genre. Hawks and Doves was also largely acoustical folk/country. He's too good for him to stop.

    Hey hey ain't that right,
    Coming apart at every nail,
Working man's in for a terrible fight,
    Coming apart at every nail,
Oh this country sure looks good to me,
But these fences are coming apart at every nail.

Ohio and Out of the Black...

    Tin soldiers and Nixon's comin'
    We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drummin'
    Four dead in Ohio.

    and of course

    My my, hey hey,
Rock and roll is here to stay
It's better to burn out than to fade away
    My my, hey hey.

Both songs have my all time favouite guitar riffs to boot! Neil long may you run! Cool
