    A dreamer of pictures
    I run in the night
    You see us together,
    chasing the moonlight,
    My cinnamon girl.

I agree, that is classic, great Neil. I had to post some of the rest of it. Perfect beautiful imagery. Clear as clear can be. Smile

And umm...thanks for posting that. Smile

Re: Four favourite first lines of a Neil Young song

I can't help it - I've been fighting the urge for days but I'm finally giving in and I'm going to post the entire lyrics of Thrashers from Rust Never Sleeps. It has to be the finest example of Neil's poetry. It's the best. Smile

    THRASHERS by Neil Young
    --------
They were hiding behind hay bales,
They were planting in the full moon
They had given all they had for something new
But the light of day was on them,
They could see the thrashers coming
And the water shone like diamonds in the dew.

And I was just getting up, hit the road before it's light
Trying to catch an hour on the sun
When I saw those thrashers rolling by,
Looking more than two lanes wide
I was feelin' like my day had just begun.

    Where the eagle glides ascending
    There's an ancient river bending
Down the timeless gorge of changes
    Where sleeplessness awaits
    I searched out my companions,
Who were lost in crystal canyons
When the aimless blade of science
    Slashed the pearly gates.

It was then I knew I'd had enough,
Burned my credit card for fuel
Headed out to where the pavement turns to sand
With a one-way ticket to the land of truth
And my suitcase in my hand
How I lost my friends I still don't understand.

    They had the best selection,
    They were poisoned with protection
There was nothing that they needed,
    Nothing left to find
They were lost in rock formations
    Or became park bench mutations
On the sidewalks and in the stations
    They were waiting, waiting.

So I got bored and left them there,
They were just deadweight to me
Better down the road without that load
Brings back the time when I was eight or nine
    I was watchin' my mama's T.V.,
It was that great Grand Canyon rescue episode.

    Where the vulture glides descending
    On an asphalt highway bending
Thru libraries and museums, galaxies and stars
Down the windy halls of friendship
To the rose clipped by the bullwhip
    The motel of lost companions
Waits with heated pool and bar.

But me I'm not stopping there,
Got my own row left to hoe
Just another line in the field of time
When the thrashers come, I'll be stuck in the sun
    Like the dinosaurs in shrines
But I'll know the time has come
    To give what's mine.

I've got to say I agree with acooper. Haven't you heard Cuds cover it? (!)

    "Sailing heart-ships thru broken harbours
Out on the waves in the night
Still the searcher must ride the dark horse
    Racing alone in his fright.
Tell me why, tell me why"

Yes I have.Wink  More than once.Smile  It's pretty good!  I love it when bands cover Neil.  It always seems like they have such a good time with it.  Jim and Greg have covered Neil  (Tell Me Why and Are You Ready for the Country respectively), with their solo acts and Blue Rodeo covered a Neil song on a tribute compilation album - I'd have to look up the title of that one.

Blue Rodeo covered I've Been Waiting for You from the self-titled album Neil Young on the tribute album Borrowed Tunes released in 1994.

Re: Four favourite first lines of a Neil Young song

    Oh jesus...
This is almost as hard as a few months ago when I went searching for Neil Young lyrics to put on my guitar case. I was only looking for one or two lines then though.
I went with "The Servicemen were Yellow and the Gasoline was green"

    Regardless
Picking my favourite openning lines is so hard.
Most of my favourite lines are... Usually mid or end of the song.

    Uhm

For the sake of choosing a song that hasn't been mentioned yet...

((Since the only song I can think of where the first lines are my favourite is in On the Way Home and... Well that was on the first page))

     Wait

    Got one
"Old man sitting by the side of the road
    With the lorries rolling by
Blue moon sinking from the weight of the load
And the buildings scrape the sky"

    If it wasn't that
It would have been the openning lines to Crime in the City

    lakegirl:
"Come a little bit closer, hear what I have to say,
Just like children sleeping, we can dream this night away,
But there's a full moon rising, let's go dancing in the light,
We know where the music's playing, let's go out and feel the night."

From the timeless classic 'Harvest Moon' -
I can never get enough of this song!

I have to agree with this one; it's my favourite Neil Young song. Such a beautiful song, and I love the sound of the broom sweeping away in the background. Of course, it also makes me a bit teary-eyed nowadays, because it was in the movie Away from Her. (That was an excellent movie, but a heart-wrenching one.)

Another favourite is "Are You Ready for the Country", thanks to Greg's version, and "Long May You Run". From the latter, I like the lines:

"Maybe the Beach Boys have got you now / With those waves singing "Caroline No" / Rollin' down that empty ocean road / Gettin' to the surf on time" (or is it "Get into the surf on time"?)

"There's the shirt that I like!"

"It was nice singing with you this evening."

Re: Four favourite first lines of a Neil Young song

Oh all that stuff about restricting yourself to the first four lines has gone out the window!

It's kind of funny that he wrote Long May You Run to a car isn't it?   Here's another good one although I don't believe it was dedicated to a vehicle.

    Someone and someone
    were down by the pond
    Looking for something
    to plant in the lawn.
    Out in the fields they
    were turning the soil
    I'm sitting here hoping
    this water will boil
When I look through the windows
    and out on the road
    They're bringing me presents
    and saying hello.

    Singing words, words
    between the lines of age.
    Words, words
    between the lines of age.

    If I was a junkman
    selling you cars,
    Washing your windows
    and shining your stars,
    Thinking your mind
was my own in a dream
    What would you wonder
    and how would it seem?
    Living in castles
    a bit at a time
    The King started laughing
    and talking in rhyme.

    Singing words, words
    between the lines of age.
    Words, words
    between the lines of age.

Ann do you know if this album is still available.  Is it just a Blue Rodeo thing or are there other artists involved??

Re: Four favourite first lines of a Neil Young song

The album is a compilation and it is listed on the "Music" link at the top of the page.  (Just scroll down and you'll see it listed under Compilations.   I checked and that particular part of the site is undergoing some maintenance right now so you may want to check with Lindsay or Aaron.   Each song is sung by a different artist.  Ron Sexsmith sang one on it too. Re: Four favourite first lines of a Neil Young song

I thought of posting this one myself the other day.  I think it was written when Neil was aware of his impending operation for a newly diagnosed aneurysm.  Perhaps he was pondering his mortality.  I'm so glad he came through that experience unscathed.  It was a pleasure to hear him sing it at Live 8. Long may he run.Smile

Ross certainly enjoyed his Neil Young tunes and I had him to thank for first twigging me to Neil's Massey Hall show back in November.  He told me he was at Neil's 1971 show there.

    I'm climbin' this ladder,
    My head in the clouds
    I hope that it matters,
    I'm havin' my doubts.

    I'm watchin' the skaters
    Fly by on the lake.
    Ice frozen six feet deep,
    How long does it take?

I look out on peaceful lands
    With no war nearby,
    An ocean of shakin' hands
    That grab at the sky.
