I think Yoda has a great point - sometimes it's not the lyrics, but the music itself that moves me to tears. This usually happens to me while watching movies, but there are a lot of songs out there that have fantastic music.
The songs whose lyrics I know, however, that make me cry:
Falling Down Blue... I actually sobbed uncontrollably at a BR concert once because of this song! It was Mont-Rolland, Quebec, June 1999. The year before, I had had a relationship with a guy who liked BR. We danced our first dance together in his living room to this song, then danced again when it was played at the Mont-Rolland concert in June 1998. After about 9 months, in Sept. '98, we both knew it was time to end it. I really missed him because he had become a best friend and helped me through a lot of stuff, but the friendship was never the same again. June '99, BR played it again and even though it was almost 10 months after we broke up, I just lost it. I'm definitely a lot better now when I hear it, but it still reminds me of a happy/sad time. It's just a beautiful song.
Slipped Away (Avril Lavigne)... I've only listened to this song once all the way through because I just can't stand the thought of my grandmother dying. I think she wrote it when her grandfather was dying or had died, but my grandmother (and only grandparent left) is very special to me and I can't imagine her not being around. Just thinking about that song is bringing tears to my eyes! The next time I will listen to that song will be when my grandma passes away... I hope that's not for a very long time.
No Need To Argue (The Cranberries)... This song used to make me cry all the time because of a different relationship, but now crying during it really depends on my mood. Still a moving song (in my mind).
Scared (The Tragically Hip)... When Gord Downie hits the right notes in this one, which happens on their live CD and most recently at the concert in Calgary last November, I can't help but cry. The sound of his voice touches my soul. That sounds rather deep and perhaps a little cheesy, but I just can't control the emotion that runs through me when I hear him sing, "...it's been a pleasure doing business with you." Gives me chills. Same goes for "Escape is at Hand for the Travelling Man" on the line, "You said anytime of the day was fine, you said anytime of the night was also fine." Love it.
Finally, there are too many songs to mention by Chantal Kreviazuk... If there is one voice that touches me more than any other, it's this woman's. I'm sure I cry half the time during her concerts! Her piano playing is incredibly moving; her lyrics have more meaning to me than any other lyrics I've heard; and her voice moves me to tears (in a good way!) all the time. Her version of "Leaving on a Jet Plane" just kills me, but the one that leaves me in a puddle of mush is "Feels Like Home" because it perfectly describes how I feel about my boyfriend, Kris. I know some of you on this board don't have great feelings about marriage anymore, but when I get to say "I do" to this man, I will be the luckiest woman on Earth, and "Feels Like Home" will be "our song."
Ok, that's enough. I'm feeling a little veclempt, so I'd better stop before my co-workers wonder what the heck is wrong with me. Thanks for listening.
