YOU ALSO PLAY THE PIANO?!?!?!? I'm not worthy.......

That was my instrument of choice when I was young. Instead, my parents bought me a guitar. I wonder what they would have bought me if I'd asked for a drum kit?

I bought a piano at an auction a few years ago, so my kids could take lessons. (At least thats what I told the wife!). It was fun learning notes, chord positioning, etc., but after moving halfway across our province a few times, I can't get it to stay in tune. Seeing Jim belt out After the Rain on the baby grand has given me some new inspiration though, so maybe this weekend I'll blow the dust off and start again.

Play is such a subjective term....hehehe
I dabble - currently teaching myself "Find a way to say goodbye" and I need to go to stratomaster and get "Love never lies."

Re: How do you usually relieve stress?

This is a really great thread! I loved reading about the ways people relieve stress... I gotta try some of those sometime.

I had to laugh when I read NYCBRFAN's post about playing "horse with no name" because that was the first official song that I learned how to play. I play it horribly but like you said, it's so much fun!! Razz My friend had showed me the chords to "Lost Together" and I went to Stratomaster's site and also tried to play while listening to the cd but I couldn't keep up. It's starting to come together a little more but it's such a slow process! I play the piano too and found the piano so much easier to learn then the guitar is. It's funny eh? With the piano, you just hit the key and the note is made, whereas with the guitar, YOU have to make the note. I think that's the major difference and why I find the guitar so difficult.

Re: How do you usually relieve stress?

Allison - yeah I read about the theory and chords before I bought the guitar and figured this would be fairly easy. However, had I known there was pain involved I might not have gone through with the decision.

But the die has been cast and I am not going to let it collect dust!!! That would cause me stress.

Another stress relief - THIS MESSAGE BOARD!!!

Re: How do you usually relieve stress?

When I was about 10 years old, I was bugging my parents for a piano but they didn't want to buy one in case I wouldn't stick with it... so they bought a keyboard instead... after a year of lessons, they decided to splurge and buy a piano. I took lessons for years and years... went through the whole Royal Conservatory of Music (exams and music festivals)... etc. The last exam I did was grade 5 and I wasn't enjoying it as much anymore so decided to stop the lessons. The theory was tiresome.

Then a couple of years ago, my parents bought me an acoustic guitar for Christmas... it's a Vantage. Dad picked it up at a pawn shop for a pretty good price. I feel guilty at times that I don't play it enough. It's all in spurts.

Oh and yes, this discussion board is a great stress reliever as well! Big Grin

Re: How do you usually relieve stress?

Allison - I find it funny that you think learning the guitar is harder than the piano! I get so frustrated (and stressed) trying to figure out where all my 10 fingers are supposed to be on the keyboard, not to mention trying to co-ordinate them with two different rythyms, rhytms, ah hell, you know what I mean!

Something that's always escaped me are the lead guitar licks. I can play rythm (here we go again) like the best of them, but trying to find a pattern at high-speed is daunting, to say the least.

NYCBRFan - Keep it up. The pain soon goes away. If you're getting cramps, go to the store and play a few different makes of guitar. I found the Seagull particularly painfull. I love the feel of my Ovation, and my Gibson Hummingbird is out of this world. Unfortunately, it's also out of most mere mortals price range. (I came into an inheritance).

    Later, all.

Re: How do you usually relieve stress?

I Fear that we are changing this thread a little, but to continue.

I guess it's a matter of what you start out on. My initial frustration with guitar is because of the physical aspect of getting notes to sound right. You don't have that on a piano. Also changing chords is tougher to me - but I'm getting there.

I have an Olympia by Tacoma guitar. The price was right at the store. I originally went in with an old guitar (don't know the name) that someone gave me and was sitting around in the basement. It needed two nylon strings and not knowing which ones they were I took it to the music store. The guy informed me it was a 3/4 size guitar and probably not worth my trying to learn on. So I'm keeping it for my daughter, and asked the guy to show me a few in the lower price range. $160 bucks later and I was walking out the door for three weeks vacation and a new hobby to learn.

Another Stress Releaver - PAID VACATION. Even if you don't go anywhere!!!

Wow, all I was doing was commenting on the poll on the main page and by doing so it looks like this thread belongs in the musicians forum.

Thanks folks for visiting my site for BR tabs. I'm glad people are getting some use out of it. Kuddos to Sparky, without him I couldn't have done it.

My ultimate stress relief is sitting in the backyard with a Tim Horton's ice cappuccino, cross-stitching with BR playing in the background. Shopping comes a close second. Yes and this board like NYCBRFAN said.

For me the best stress reliever is to pound the heck out of my drums playing along to Blue Rodeo. This is usually followed by a long session on my bass guitar playing (you guessed it) Blue Rodeo tunes. Muchos gracias to Strat et al for the tab site!

Playing guitar will help and if I get so wrapped up in it and absorbed and not really playing anything, just start jammin', I'll start playing turn arounds of different chords, or riffs and sometimes a new song pop's out. Stress channeled into song writing.

Or if I'm not in the mood to play I find a beer takes the edge off.

I've been using a cold beer bottle to help dull the fingers in my left hand while I'm practicing. God - I usually can only play for an hour - but if my fingers tire, I just put them in the correct places and practice strumming.

    Until all the beer.............hic........takes ....hic....over

Re: How do you usually relieve stress?

I haven't been stressed out for a while, but one
thing I really like to do is to turn all the lights off,
connect my headphones, sit back in my oversized-recliner,
    and listen to:
Toad The Wet Sproket's "Coil" if I need spiritual Peace,
"Gone" from Greg Keelor if I need a good cry,
"Dark Side Of The Moon" if I don't know what the heck is wrong with me.

If you have all kinds of music in the house, you've
got the cure for anything and everything. Smile
