After you've typed a message, click on "HTML" in the toolbar above the message screen.

Wherever I type a curly bracket {}, you must substitute a triangle bracket<>.

What I did was take out all the {p} and {/p} tags (the paragraph tags) and type in {br} (the break tag) every place I wanted a new line to start.

Does that make any more sense?

    Well, let's see.........
    Testing
    Testing
    Testing

I guess it worked but that's a whole whack of work just to make a list:

    • I think I'd rather
    • use this function, the unordered list
    • as long as it lets me make the lines as long as I need to
    • and it seems like it is working for me this time so now I'm done playing or I mean testing, testing. Laughing

Re: Questions About The New Board

If you want to go to a next line, and not have that big gap, hit the shift key and the return at the same time.

    here I hit return alone

here I hit shift and return
and there is not extra line.

If you hit just return, a tag, standing for paragraph is inserted. But if you hit the shift key and the return key at the same time, it only enters a tag which a line break.

You can add some space in a list in the same way, by pressing the shift and return key.

I think the delays and stutters between seeing the text appear and typing the letters have to do the asynchronous javascript and XML the board uses to make features a little more fluid.

Thanks, Daneane!  Shift-Enter is a new technique for me.
    But it works very well.
Not that I need it here, but it will come in handy later.

OK, I was able to get around it by editing the html code.  I replaced the default paragraph tags with break tags.  Does that help?

Right now, the text editor is adding in a paragraph tag everytime you hit enter.

You can get around this by going into the HTML, removing paragraph tags

     and adding in break tags
like schwa_girl did. Or follow Daneane instructions hit shift & return at the same time.

This adding in of paragraph tags is annoying and I'm going to see if there's some easier way around it. But I make no promises

I've also noticed the typing delay. However, it's not doing it right now so maybe it's been fixed. Here's hoping.

Re: An overview of new board benefits, problems and a wishlist

Below in red are my answers to the majority of the points in Daneane's message. I have not answered everything because some of the points don't need answers while others have to do with personal preferences (font size for example). If anyone has any further questions, please feel free to post them in this form.

    Daneane2:

    Log-in

    1. Trouble for Board Members who used certain characters like "* ! ? / ". In trying to log in initially, they have encountered weirdness. This Board doesn't like special characters in user names. This something that we'll now have to clean up.
    2. The old board had both username and display name. The new board only has the name you use to log in. This has made many new names show up. For instance, when I sign in, I've always used "Daneane2", but my "display name", the one on all my posts, was "Daneane". If people PM me with what they want their user name to be, I will make sure that it gets changed.
    3. The date of joining board is not correct. This will be corrected tomorrow.
    4. The amount of posts is off. I have no idea why that would happen; it shouldn't. Can someone please give me an example that I can look into? Thanks

    Board Appearance

    1. No exact "post count" in view, requires three clicks to see. It was either really obvious post counts or guitar picks. I thought people would want to keep the guitar picks more.
    2. Uneven distribution of posting tools. There are big icons along the top right of each message as options, but the "quick reply" is in a small light color font at the bottom, and not easily seen.  Quick Reply" is in the standard link colour. Its location is not an unusual one for a quick reply button. The "Reply" button is more prominent since it offers more options. But if people feel strongly about the location of the "Quick Reply" button, we can look into changing it.
    3. Lack of "titles" on links to tell you what that link is about when you put your mouse over it &
    4. Many images and links do not change in any way when you mouse over them to see they are links and what they do. For instance, clicking on the little guitar picks, takes you to a search of that person's messages. But that is not clear when you put your mouse over them (lacking "title" on href) . We'll look into adding in titles where we can.
    5. At the bottom of the edit post page, the bottom links (events, music, read...) are just empty brackets. I haven't come across this yet but I'm keeping my eye out for it.

    Board Navigation

    1. The sidebar on the main forum page has lots of good and useful links. But in a single thread view, that sidebar disappears. This is distracting since the page changes, and we lose those navigation options. It's keep the short cuts and have a smaller board space or drop the shortcuts and have a larger board space. We thought that people would prefer to see more of the posts by having a large board space. People have already mentioned that they have to scroll more when using this board. Adding in the shortcuts would only create more scrolling.
    2. "New since last visit" goes on for days and days. This has been fixed.
    3. When going in to see someones profile, the only way back is a not very visible link that goes to the main forum page, rather than the page you were on previously. You can also hit the "Back" button.

    Composing Messages

    1. Using either "reply" or "quick reply" it is difficult to also be able to view thread your are replying to. The quick reply window sticks, so can't be moved aside. This is a big reason why we made the "Reply" button more prominent than the "Quick Reply" button. The "Reply" button allows you to read the most recent post unlike the "Quick Reply" feature that is best used for quick posts where you don't need to re-read a previous post before your answer.
    2. Lack of emoticons/smileys! This will be changing.
    3. The emoticon selections sometimes dont's show up in firefox until you move your mouse over them. We'll look into this.
    4. Behaviour in input box a little weird. For instance, there are times I cannot delete an empty space between two words. &
    5. Double space when you hit return when composing a message. - This two problems will be fixed when an new version of the text editor comes out in August. Until then, the double space issue can be dealt with by going into the HTML or by hitting the "shift" & "enter" keys at the same time.
    6. Sometimes a long delay after hitting submit before anything happens. If this happens to you, hit "Refresh."
    7. Has an "HTML" option, but unclear what is allowed and what is not. The HTML text editor allows all basic HTML.

    Editing Messages

    1. Strange glitches that sometimes say you cannot edit something you just posted. This problem will be fixed when an new version of the text editor comes out in August.
    2. What are the two boxes underneath the main message in the edit screen? "Edit Notes" allows you to include a note explaining why something was edited. Some boards require that an edit note be added in whenever someone edits a post. We decided to leave this field optional. The second box just contains any previous edit notes.

    Private Messages

    1. Private messages cannot be shared among multiple members. We're looking into re-adding this feature however, don't expect to see it back soon.
    2. New private message cannot be started from inbox. Something else we're looking into.

    Profile

    1. No titles for volunteer staff and administrators. Icons are being created that will set mods/admin/crew members apart from everyone else.
    2. Unclear what kind of formatting is allowed in various input lines like signature and location - what HTML is allowed. You should be able to do whatever you were able to do on the old board.
    • lack of communication between admin and users regarding preferred features We would have loved to have kept all the features that were on the old Board. However, this wasn't possible because the new Board offers a different set of features. Having people tell us that they love being able to send multiple PMs really wouldn't have done much good since the new Board does not support this and a number of other features.

Re: An overview of new board benefits, problems and a wishlist

kewl!  Nice to see all the concerns everyone has raised addressed.

btw,  this thread is duplicated.  If you look at the suggestion box homepage, both the top topics have different names, but are the same thread.  And both say they are started by me, but only one was.

    Lindsay:

others have to do with personal preferences (font size for example).

The font thing wasn't really personal preference in this instance, I wasn't clear.   The fonts appear much bigger in Internet Explorer on a PC.  They are MUCH smaller on a Mac.  There are a lot of CSS fixes for this issue.

Though it could be argued as the 'personal preference' by some to disregard the existence of Mac users.  But, no worries,  we're used to it. Devil

I know I am sorely lacking in understanding of this technical 'stuff', so if my question doesn't make sense to you tech people, please just consider where it's coming from!Embarassed

My question has to do with replying to messages. Lindsay posted to Daneane's comment:

OK, that's great if you're replying to the last post. If I'm replying to a post before that, do I have any options to see it as I post? I know somone posted somewhere about opening multiple windows, it all seemed very complicated! Does it have to be this hard? Or am I just really, really stupid?Embarassed

Re: An overview of new board benefits, problems and a wishlist

I don't really have any complaints about the boards, but one concern I have right now is that on the old board, I had turned off the option for an email alert to any new PM's and it supposedly gives that option here too, but it doesn't work.  I'm still getting emails and I don't want them.  Can this be fixed please?

I don't think it is too hard. And I don't think you're a bit stoopid! I think it's just getting used to some different board techniques.

Schwa_girl mentioned opening multiple browser windows.  So in one window, you could see the post, and in another window, you could write your response.

To do this, you could choose to "open the link in a new window".  If you use Internet Explorer on a Windows PC, put your mouse over the "reply" link, then click the right mouse button to see a menu of options appear.  One of them will be to "open in new window".

If you use firefox, you could choose the "open in new tab" option.

Occasionally the typing appears as vertical lines.  I continue to type anyway and eventually the lines snap into text.  It looks like bar-code until it changes though...hope it's not just me lol.

Thanx, Daneane! For some reason I had a brief moment of clarity & somehow it all made sense!Laughing

Now, I am still in a muddle about getting the emoticons from the Options. I understand how to get the code for them but after I go into Options how do I get back to my message? I keep losing it?Embarassed

Lindsay, you had asked for an example of the post counts being off. DebP should have 3 picks & a count of 3001 or 3002. Instead she has 4 picks & 4,670.

A number of others have commented in numerous threads about their counts being up from what they should be.
