Anne Lindsay – News From Up the Street - CD Release
(I just received this info in an email.)
Master of a wealth of diverse styles and blessed with a rare talent for improvisation, Anne Lindsay brings all of her skill into fine focus on the 14 powerful tracks of her new CD, News From Up the Street. He Shoots, He Scores was composed in the stands of the Air Canada Centre in Toronto while Anne fiddled the Toronto Maple Leafs to one of their occasional victories. The Twisty Tune Set would sit comfortably in a Shelburne Fiddle contest in some parallel and slightly bent universe. There are echoes of Afro-pop, and elusive wisps of Finlandia inspired by Anne’s stint in the pit of the Lord of the Rings stage show. What sets News From Up the Street apart from her first CD is the addition of Anne’s heart-catching vocals. There’s a touch of retro jazz in Gershwin’s The Man I Love, a nod to the folk-jazz of Dan Hicks with the title track News From Up the Street, a rolling version of Ken William’s evocative Wichita Fog – but the gem of the album may well be the first of Anne’s lyrics to be captured on disc, Once I Was in Stockholm. This magical song takes its melody from Andrew Downing’s tune Stockholm, and Anne’s exquisite lyric transports the listener across oceans into the heart of a yearning young lover. The violin has often been compared with the human voice; Anne’s voice certainly shares with her violin an ability to capture every nuance of emotion. News From Up the Street marks a major step forward in Anne Lindsay’s remarkable career. After the release, it will be available through Festival Distribution and Maple Music, but for now you can purchase advance copies by cheque ($20) from Violindsay Music Inc. P.O. Just received Anne's latest email: The Continuing Adventures of
News From Up The Street Anne Lindsay Saturday March 3rd The Rivoli – 334 Queen St. W, Toronto Doors 6PM • Show 6:30PM 416-596-1908 Tickets @ the Door $10
Hi, Remember last fall’s release party for News From Up the Street, at Toronto’s Lula Lounge? Well, right after that I headed off across the country with Jim Cuddy’s band. Since that tour ended I’ve been touring southern Ontario with Jason Fowler, promoting my new CD. Every road leads home, and on March 3rd I’ll be at the Rivoli in Toronto with Jason.
It’s a more intimate show than the release party, and it’s a great opportunity to hear the interplay of Jason’s guitar with my fiddle. We have a lot of fun on these duo gigs, and I think that you’d really enjoy the show.
Following my early evening show, I’ll take on a new role as hip-hop fiddler, joining my son Tosh as his Two Left brings their energetic and passion-filled Hip Hop to Rhythmicru and ICM’s Heads Connect series at The Rivoli (doors at 10pm). And Tosh will be collaborating with Jason and I on our show.
On another front, you may recall that in 2006, I was nominated for VIOLINIST OF THE YEAR at the National Jazz Awards, and guess what – it’s happened again. If you’d like to vote for me, hie yourself off to the electronic polling station. However, please note that you must answer ALL questions in order for your vote to count; i.e., select "None of the above" in order to skip any question. If any category is missing a vote - then your ENTIRE vote does not count.
For those of you who are interested, here is the direct link: http://www.nationaljazzawards.com/phpQJr/poll.php?pid=2
If I win this year, I’m going to invite you all to a picnic on Toronto Island, just to celebrate.
Thanks again for all your support,
Anne

Re: Latest Anne Lindsay News
Dar, have you got Anne's new CD? Unlike Eavesdropping that was all instrumental, Anne sings on several songs on News From Up The Street. She has a very pretty voice!

I love Anne's new CD! And, my little ones just adore the fiddle music and we dance away the morning to it! In fact, we have managed to incorporate it into our galloping around on our hobby horse's/child size brooms! Oh what fun we have! Yeppers, we all love it!

My apologies if this is posted elsewhere already. From Anne's latest email: I’ll be on CBC Television this Monday performing on Words to Music: The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. I’ll be playing with George Canyon and James Taylor. This awards show honours the best in Canadian songwriting and includes great performances by Jim Cuddy, Herbie Hancock and Measha Brueggergosman, among others. The show will air on CBC Television on Monday, March 5 at 8:00PM (8:30NT) local time.

Re: Latest Anne Lindsay News
November 2007
News From Up The Street
Anne Lindsay- Autumn Leaves
My CD News From Up the Street has received two nominations at the Canadian Folk Music Awards:
Best Instrumentalist – Solo and Producer of the Year (shared with Oliver Schroer)
I’m thrilled at receiving recognition from the wonderfully talented, supportive and diverse folk music community in Canada. The awards show will be on December 1, 2007 at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Quebec. http://www.canadianfolkmusicawards.ca
And even though autumn itself won't be leaving for a couple of months, here's where I'll be going:
In late November Jason Fowler and I are heading north in Ontario for a few concerts.
Friday, Nov. 23 South River - Renée's Café - 8pm - 705-386-0977 with special guest, Ron Nigrini http://www.renees.net
Saturday, Nov. 24 Honora Bay, Manitoulin Island - Café in the Woods, 8pm - 705-368-2744
Sunday, Nov. 25 ANNE LINDSAY BAND Sudbury, 7pm Dairy Queen Out of the Cold series St. Andrew's Place 111 Larch St 705-523-6200
Then in December John McDermott opens a box of Christmas dates. Check http://www.johnmcdermott.com/sched.htm for details.
Early in the new year I’ll be playing in London, Ottawa, Milton, Stonecroft (Woodstock), and Toronto. More details to follow and on my web site http://anne-lindsay.com
Enjoy the last of the fast fading fall colours, and get out your warm clothes.
Peace, Anne

Re: Latest Anne Lindsay News
January 31, 2008
News From Up The Street
Anne Lindsay- New Year News
A rare blue sky day in Toronto – the winter has been a touch on the dreary side – and though it’s nowhere near as frigid as the Prairies this week even the natural ice rinks in our city are frozen solid. It’s tempting to lace up the skates, but there are strings to be bowed and lots of new tunes percolating through the fingers. Jason Fowler and I had so much fun with our duo shows last year that we’ve booked a bunch of shows in Ontario over the next few weeks:
Sunday, February 10, 8pm - OTTAWA – at the new GCTC Irving Greenberg Theatre Centre, 1233 Wellington St W (at Holland). Jason and I are being presented by the Ottawa Folk Festival as part of the Acoustic Waves concert series. I’ve heard great things about this theatre as a music venue and we’re really looking forward to playing there. Jason and I are giving up restraint for Lent, so this show will be hot. Tickets are $25 at the GCTC box office, 613-236-5196 http://www.gctc.ca Saturday, February 16 – WOODSTOCK – Stonecroft House Concert. Tickets are $20; call 519-423-6797 http://www.stonecroftfolk.ca
Sunday, February 17, 4pm – LONDON – Jazz Vespers at St. James Westminster Church, 115 Askin St. Monday, February 18, 8pm – TORONTO – Olifiddle #2 at Hugh’s Room, 2261 Dundas St W. This is a follow-up to last year’s spectacular series of shows celebrating the work of the marvellous Oliver Schroer. We have a stellar line-up of performers over two nights; check out the Hugh’s Room web site for details on who’s playing when. http://www.hughsroom.com
Tuesday, February 19, 8 pm – TORONTO – Olifiddle #2 at Hugh’s Room, second show – just as great as the Monday show. Saturday, March 1, 8pm – INNISFIL – Innisfil Lion’s Hall. For those of you a little north of the big city. http://www.petersplayers.com Sunday, March 2, 7:30pm – TORONTO – Flying Cloud Folk Club at the Tranzac club (Brunswick Ave just south of Bloor). This is a local show – I mean, this is my local pub – just through my back yard and down the alley. The Tranzac is home to some of the best music in Toronto these days and we’re delighted to be back in the back room with the Mariposa concert series. Come on down and make the Tranzac rock. http://www.flyingcloudfolk.ca
The summer is starting to fill up with festivals, but we’ll talk about that another day. Get out in the sun as the days lengthen, soak up some vitamins and then come and say Hi at one of our shows. Cheers, Anne

Not as mean as Anne, though!! LOL We just saw her & Jason in London, Josh, at the London Music Club. Very good show.

Re: Latest Anne Lindsay News
Oh I can trust that! Shes liek majored in the fiddle while (Kthleen started on fiddle) Kathleen plays guitar. I play the guitar and mandolin too but my major is Fiddle and I would love to play as good as her! (But my teacher says, for starting last year, and a quite mean player. I've already played with family bands) Ah.. fun memories
