Seen any good movies lately?
It's been a while since we started a thread about movies... so I figured I'd start a fresh one. I,m getting ready to go see the movie "Borat" at the theatre. Have any of you seen it?? I'll let you know what I thought of it. It looks pretty funny. I saw the Trailer Park Boys movie a while back. It was HILARIOUS! I would love to see it again. I was laughing out loud in the theatre through the movie. I wouldn't mind seeing that cartoon about penguins with Robin Williams too. Looks cute!!

Re: Seen any good movies lately?
I saw 'Marie Antoinette' not long ago. It was a visually beautiful movie, but a little disappointing as far as the script was concerned. Definitely a 'girly' movie!
I carry with me the memory of a field I once knew, of a night so full of stars that I was left humbled by it's endless beauty. I know that whatever the cost, life is worth living. So bring it on...I can take it.

Re: Seen any good movies lately?
I saw Borat last weekend. LMAO. The humour is different, very offensive. I was able to see the new Tenacious D movie "The Pick of Destiny" It was hilarious. Jack Black is at his finest in this movie.

Re: Seen any good movies lately?
We went to go see "Stranger Than Fiction" a week ago or so. Brilliant movie... not one of those silly Will Ferrel zanny comedy movies (ie: Elf, Old School). That is not to say the movie is not funny (at times), but it is very interesting and moving too. I was never much of a Maggie Gyllenhall fan until this movie either. Dusting Hoffman and Emma Thompson are great as well. Might be a stretch for some folks...

Re: Seen any good movies lately?
Last night I went to the new Bond film Casino Royale. It is very different than the other bond movies. This bond is not as in control as the others. However it was a really good movie. It had a good plot and lots of action. I would definitely recommend it.

Re: Seen any good movies lately?
I've seen several films over the past couple of weeks. Casino Royale was one of them, and I agree with jellolyn's review, definitely worth seeing. The opening sequence shows Bond chasing a man, on foot! No cars, just a lot of running, leaping, jumping. It was amazing. For Christmas, I got The Harder They Come and The Life and Times of Guy Terrifico. The first one is set in Jamaica in the 1970's, about a poor, uneducated, innocent teenager that moves from the country to the city (Kingston) in the hopes of becoming a famous singer. Instead, he becomes famous as an outlaw. The second film most of the folks on the board know about, as it has two cameos of Jim and Greg. Now I love Greg, but if Jim is your cup of tea, let me just say... he looks absolutely stunning. All Jim fans should own a copy of the film for that reason alone. The story itself is great. I'm a Kris Kristofferson fan and his part in the film is very well done. Merle Haggard also appears as himself. In case you haven't heard of it, it is a comedy about a fictional character. I also saw Monkey Warfare. This film stars Don McKellar and his long-time partner (I can't remember her name but I've seen her in lots of Canadian productions). These two actors portray two people who, in their younger days, were part of a group whose actions were similar to those of The Weather Underground (a documentary was made about this very real group: http://www.upstatefilms.org/weather/). Let me say that it is my personal belief that no good ever came of engaging in destructive acts. Somehow they escape prosecution, and live in a Toronto neighborhood called Parkdale. They meet a young woman who is a younger version of them, and they try to tell her that engaging in destructive acts does not make for a better world. This film has some very funny moments (one involving a scene where a Leonard Cohen song is played and does have the intended effect), and other moments are rather scary and sad. If you see it at your local video store, I highly recommend renting it. My local Rogers had a Boxing Week sale and I picked up Syriana, starring George Clooney as a CIA agent. Time to look into alternative sources of energy, folks!

Re: Seen any good movies lately?
I saw Night at the Museum last weekend with my family and for those looking for some funny creative family fair this is a great movie! The concept of having subjects at a natural history museum come to life at night is brilliant and has tremendous variety. I am by no means a Puritan, but it is very difficult to find family fair that is creative, free of serious violence, bad language, and or sex. So if you are looking for something that fits that bill check out this flick.

Re: Seen any good movies lately?
Allison, I saw "Borat" over the holidays as well...LOVED it!!! Too funny!!! Therese, "Guy Terrifico" was awesome, eh? I have the soundtrack as well - Bob Egan plays pedal steel on a couple of tracks on it too! (highly recommended!)

Re: Seen any good movies lately?
It's not a new movie, but it's just come out on video.... my favourite movie of the year was "Little Miss Sunshine". Just a small indie film (though with an all-star cast - Greg Kinnera, Toni Collette, Steve Carrell, Alan Arkin). It was (IMO) just perfect - funny, warm, touching.... you'll laugh, you'll cry....

Re: Seen any good movies lately?
Hey Christian... glad you enjoyed Borat! I never did come back to this thread to comment on it eh? I LOVED the movie too... I was laughing out loud several times, which is rare for me to do. I have a weird sense of humour, or so I've been told. This movie is not for everyone though... some may find it offensive and in bad taste. I caught an Ali G marathon on Showcase the other day. That show is pretty darn funny too. He's a talented guy that Sacha Baron Cohen! As for other movies I've seen lately... I went to a matinée of "The Holiday" the other day. Classic chick flick! Chick flicks are my guilty pleasure. I went to see this one alone because there was no way I was convincing my dad to come see this one! haha! That's ok though. We all have different taste. I also saw "Little Miss Sunshine" on the flight from Montreal to Las Vegas too. It was really good! I want to see it again on a real TV though. The ear phones they give you on planes aren't the best. haha!

Re: Seen any good movies lately?
Well I haven't had a chance to go to the theatres lately but I've seen An Inconvenient Truth, man, I couldn't sleep. That is sooooo scarey. Plus I watched the Descent, do not watch, it sucked. Oh I love the Lake House with Keenu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. I know that it's an older show and I got it on DVD but I cried. Hmmm, but I cry at the Simpsons

Re: Seen any good movies lately?
I saw An Inconvenient Truth today and loved it. I've never seen so many bases covered by any other article or televison feature. He lays out quite a few facts in an entertaining way doesn't he? It reminded me of the article I read in No Depression magazine which was in the same issue as an interview with Jim and Greg. In it, Neil Young had quite a bit to say about the use of oil and gas and how in Europe everybody uses eco-diesel. Apparently the diesel engines can accept this so-called eco-diesel which is plant oil like canola or vegetable oil. The vehicles can use it - it doesn't pollute or emit CO2 which is causing the greenhouse effect or "global warming" and it is a renewable resource grown on farmland. I found it interesting that Neil didn't put down the SUVs or hummers of the world - he just stated that they could be using a more environmentally friendly fuel than gas and oil. The next one I want to see in this genre is Who Killed the Electric Car?
