Re: Seen any good movies lately?

I saw Bobby at one of the local repertory theatres a couple of weeks ago.  Greg Keelor wrote "There's a picture we've all seen / It was taken in the lobby of the L.A. Ambassador Hotel / It's the silhouette of a man in another's arms".  The silhouette of the man he refers to was Robert F. Kennedy, shot dead minutes after he gave his Democratic California primary victory speech.

The film itself is a fictional account of the lives of several people in and around the L.A. Ambassador Hotel during June 5 and the early morning of June 6, 1968.  Some are there because they work there, others because they are involved with the Kennedy campaign.  I think the film did a good job of capturing the mood of the times, the hope that Bobby Kennedy inspired, the futility of the Vietnam war, and the despair of another assassination of another great public figure (Martin Luther King Jr was shot dead on April 4,1968).

The movie ends with the speech that Bobby Kennedy gave upon hearing of Martin Luther King Jr's death, it's delivered as a voice-over.  Here is the speech:   Listen to the entire speech 6:12, here is the text:  http://www.historyplace.com/speeches/rfk.htm

The tragedy of life doesn't lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach.

Re: Seen any good movies lately?

We finally got our DVD working again, so we've been going crazy renting movies lately.  We watched "The Departed" last night.  It was ok, but I don't think it deserved "best movie" at the Oscars.  It just seemed like your typical mobster movie... so Hollywood.  Mind you, it did have some interesting plot twists... and the acting was excellent.

One movie I saw recently that I absolutely adored was "Running with Scissors".  Have any of you seen it??  This is my favourite kind of movie... you know... off the wall... kinda dark (film noir I think they call them).  I thought it was brilliant!

I also rented a movie called "Friends with Money" the other day... with Frances McDormand, Jennifer Aniston, Joan Cusack... I thought it was pretty good.  I had never heard of it before.  I don't remember it coming to the theatres around here.  Good dialogue scenes.

Allison, I didn't know Running with Scissors was out. I read the book ,and it was really good, I have been anxiously awaiting the movie. I can't believe it's on DVD already and I didn't know.

I didn't read that book but I've read two other books by Augusten Burrows....Dry and Magical Thinking. Maybe I'll rent that movie this weekend.

I finally just saw The Wedding Crashers...someone should have warned me to wear a depends before putting it on. I cried laughing!!!!

I'll have to check out those other two by Augusten Burrows, Running With Scissors was just how Allison described, funny but dark. It was a great book, I started listening to it on tape and that was not going fast enough so I ran out and bought the book.

Ray, if you want, I'd be more than happy to send my copy up to you.

and Wedding Crashers, it was hilarious, eh? Sorry we didn't warn you, hope you didn't have too much of a mess Wink

Let me know once you've seen the movie katiescarlet!  I'd be curious to hear what you thought.  They always say the book is better than the movie.  I haven't read it though... so I can't compare.

Tonight, we rented a movie called "Leo" with Elizabeth Shue.  I really enjoyed it.  It's about this man who is writing a book about his life... and he just got out of prison.  Very interesting story!

Went and saw "Shooter" with my son today. Pretty good political thiller about a former Marine sniper who unwittingly gets involved in and blamed for a Presidential assassination attempt.  One of the highlights is a 10 min. appearance by Levon Helm, who was back in fine form as an actor.

Re: Seen any good movies lately?

I saw 300 a few weeks ago. It was very good, but a bit too graphic (violent) for my liking. The cinematography is excellent, so I recommend this one! If you're like me though, you'll have to cover your eyes a few times!

My brother, niece and I just got back from seeing Blades of Glory with Will Ferrel and the guy from Napoleon Dynamite! OMG! It was hilarious!! I pity the people who were sitting near us! Those of you who've ever heard my belly laugh will know what I'm talking about! My brother is just as bad as I am, so it was a double whammy! I give this movie a thumbs wayyyyyyyyyyy up!

Oh I want to see that movie, I may even trek out to the theatre to do so...I'm glad to hear it was good, sometimes those movies are only as good as the previews, ya know what i mean, but I love the one commercial when he says "it's mind bottling", that is to funny.

Oh, it was really worth seeing! You won't be disappointed!! I laughed at that "mind bottling" part! He says lots of funny stuff like that throughout the movie! My brother and I just went out for a bite to eat and we were howling out loud remembering some of the parts! Needless to say, we got more than a few weird looks from our fellow diners! LOL!
