    Thanks From Dizzy and Patty!!

Wow folks, where to begin.  I know there are other threads about Stratford and the weekend experience, but I really felt the need to start my (our) own.  Patty and I have been mentioned in so many other threads and thanked for all the hard work we did.  We really do appreciate that because the weekend is a ton of work for both of us.  Your kind words and thoughts mean a lot.  It took me so long to post about the weekend because as soon as I got home, I unfortunately had to catch the 6:30 flight Monday morning to Ottawa for business.  I say “unfortunately” because I could have used a day or two of down time after Stratford to recuperate a little bit.  It has been non stop chaotic work since then!  I finally have a few minutes to sit down and compose my thoughts.  That said, allow me to ramble on in what will no doubt be a long post of my thoughts and recollections from the weekend.

To the band, as always, thanks!  I especially have to say a million thanks to Bruce and Ed for sitting behind us and playing all 25 songs.  Not only did they do that, they also practiced most of them before the meet and greet started with the various musicians.  They basically started at 11:00ish, practiced till 2:30 or so, then were back at it from the start of the Meet jam around 4:00.  To say those two played their hearts out for us would be an understatement.  Ed, as our newest addition, I cannot thank you enough for the help you provided with the sound and technical aspects of things.  From the second I opened the doors for you at 9:00 on Saturday, I knew we would get along just fine!  You are one cool dude!!  Thanks Bruce, Thanks Ed!

I also have to say how thrilled I was to see so many new faces performing at the Meet and Greet jam this year.  It was so refreshing to see all the new blood and hear all those new voices.  And what voices they were!  I don’t think anyone will disagree with me that Kelly and Warren can harmonize like nobody’s business!  Derek and Tara also left us in awe of their musical abilities.  Rob, thanks for making the effort to come all the way back out on Saturday to join us!!  Ray, well, it takes a fair amount of guts to get up and do “After the Rain” my friend.  Craig, good to see you up there again doing some songs!  Ryan and Joe, thanks for treating us to the originals at the after show!  It’s one thing to play someone else’s tunes, quite another to play your own!   And of course Art, as always playing with so many people on so many songs.

I definitely have a few favourate moments from the Jam.  A highlight was doing “Stratford Blues”, Adele’s new song, and having Paul up there playing Bass with us on the song.  His first public performance and although seemingly nervous, he was solid!  And how about having Lori, Ann and Adele sing back up for me on Moon and Tree?  To me, that moment was what the weekend was all about.  I can honestly say, looking out into the audience during that song, I saw the most smiling faces looking back at us!

Perhaps the absolute biggest highlight of the live jam music for both Patty and I was when a certain Eastern Ontario farmer took the stage to entertain us with his versions of old time Rock and Roll and Country.  As Lori has mentioned elsewhere, farmer Dan may not have been too thrilled with Stratford the first time, but I don’t think she’ll ever have a problem getting him back.  Dan got up a couple of times to play a few tunes and I have to tell you, each time he did, we couldn’t wipe the smile of our faces!  We were literally giddy watching him!  At the end of Saturday night, we were both so tired and just about ready to call it a night when Dan got up and did some songs!  All of a sudden, we were both bopping in our seats and grinning from ear to ear!!!  Cripes, I’m still singing T for Texas!!!!  I leaned over to Lori at one point and said to her “I could listen to him play all night”.  I know a little about guitar and a little about music, and I know when someone has “game”.  Let me tell you, Farmer Dan has game!  He picked up that guitar and what he played came straight from the heart.  I figure I can always tell when someone is playing because they have practiced a song, and I can tell when someone is playing because the music is flowing from within.  Dan, don’t ever stop playing.  You are so refreshing and a true joy to watch!  When we retired for the evening on Saturday, all Patty and I could talk about was how much you made us smile!  Patty said to me, “It was like watching a young Elvis”.  She specifically said to me, “when you post about this weekend, make sure you tell Dan how much he made me smile”!  I also thoroughly enjoyed our conversations about guitars and life in general!  Lori’s right, you are one of the most easy going guys one could hope to meet!  Oh yeah – your girlfriend, she’s ok too (other than being a really bad influence on me making me smoke all those cigarettes)!!!!  Seriously though, take us up on our invite, you guys rock!!!

Of course I have to echo the other thanks sent the way of the “Schwa’s”.  Paul and Adele are people we call friends now.  Between planning aspects of the meet, and working on music together, I can assure you they are outstanding people.  On Saturday night as the jam was ending, Adele presented me with a plaque that Paul had made.  It was engraved with “Stratford 2007” and signed by Greg and the Sadie’s.  A really cool memento of the weekend.  But what was more touching was the card that accompanied it.  It was addressed to Patty and I, and it was full of comments and signatures from so many people.  I never had a chance to read it at the Meet, but when I returned to our room later, I had tears in my eyes reading it.

    The Card:

    The Plaque:

I saw Sonja’s name mentioned in another thread, but again, I have to echo the thanks sent her way.  You folks had to see what she did for quite a few hours.  Quietly sitting there working on the name tags, making sure they were just perfect, and then spending a lot more time with Cathy handing them out at the door during the meet.  I think Jenn helped with that too!  These people are quite literally the unsung hero’s of the weekend.

Ann, thanks for the rides to and from the theatre!  Who knew you were Brendan’s little sister???  Small world!  Sorry for the singing in your ears all the way through Love and Understanding, but I just couldn’t keep it in!!!!

Like everyone else, I met a ton of new people this weekend.  You were all great, and I should say thanks to each and every one of you, but this post will be annoyingly long as it is.

Dar and Randy, as always, a great pleasure!  Thanks for sharing that blown speaker with us on Saturday night!!

Cathy, thanks for the beers!  You are truly a genuine person.  When you gave me that hug at the end of the weekend, I could tell it was from the heart!!

Jenn, so nice to finally meet you!  Great to see you having such a good time and I hope you’ll come back!!  You have to be the only person that leaves Florida to come to Canada in January!!!!

Ray, what can I say, anyone that buys a souvenir like that is my kinda guy!!!

Linda, I never had much contact with you one the board previously, and we never discussed a lot of things at all, but from the second you said “Hi Dizzy” at the reception desk, you struck me as a very warm person.  Then you gave me those few little “gifts” over the course of the weekend.  I just want you to know I was truly touched by your actions!  You are a real sweetheart.  As of this afternoon, your disc is in the mail!

Therese, always a treat to see you.  Do you ever stop smiling?  I swear, if I had one quarter of your positive energy, I’d be a happy camper.

I’m sure I’ve forgotten to mention a bunch of people, but you get the idea.  It’s not about the concerts, it’s not about the Meet, and it’s not about the jam.  It’s about the people!

Speaking of the people, Patty mentioned to me how bad she felt that she didn’t know everyone by name, or perhaps didn’t recognize people immediately and wanted to apologize to those whose names she had forgotten.  I sometimes forget that I know so many of you because we chat all year long.  Patty on the other hand almost never reads the board, and for the most part, has no idea about most of the people here.  So for her, your faces are ones she sees once a year.  Unlike me, she doesn’t associate them with all the stories and goings on from the board.  She constantly says to me over the course of the weekend “who’s that again”!  It’s really quite funny as I tend to forget she doesn’t know you as well as I do.  She often feels odd that people know so much about us, and yet, she has little idea who they are!

Sorry for the incredibly long post, but the weekend left both Patty and I emotionally and physically drained.  Part of writing all this down for me, is a little therapy to help me remember all the good parts of the weekend.  They certainly out number the “bad parts”.  However, it is those “bad parts” that I am simply choosing not to deal with anymore.  I did mention before that this would probably be our last year being this heavily involved in the music part of the Meet.  This weekend only affirmed that, mostly for reasons I will choose to keep private.

One thing I will say I was disappointed with was when Randy from the Old English Parlour contacted me (after we had all left) to inform me of smoking in one of the guest rooms.  I won’t say who it was, although I do know (and you know who you are too).  Those kind of things reflect poorly on our group as a whole and are disappointing.  Randy has expressed that those particular room guests will not be welcome back at the Old English Parlour.

So now that my “reflections” are done, I’ll close the book on another great year in Stratford.  Dare I say it was the best one for us yet?  I am sure we’ll be at the Meet next year (please don’t let the concerts be the weekend of January 13 – we already have plans for that weekend), and I’ll probably bring a guitar to sing a song or two.  But until then, thank you so much for allowing us to be part of such a special event for the last 3 years!  Thank you for making us feel like we were “stars”.  Thanks for all the great compliments!  But most of all, thanks for being friends!!!  You people are AWESOME!!!!!

    Peter and Patty

Re: Thanks From Dizzy and Patty!!

What a great post Dizzy.  It really sounds like another fabulous weekend.  I am in denial that this was the best year yet because I couldn't have missed out on that.  Wink

As someone who has been there and wasn't this year I find it very interesting to read how many people have commented that they need to collect their thoughts before they post because it is so emotional etc.  Both times that I have been lucky enough to go to Stratford I have felt that way.  I completely agree with you Dizzy that the weekend is about the people.  I can honestly say I would not travel from BC to Ontario in JANUARY to see Blue Rodeo.  We are lucky to love a band that tours a lot so for me flying to Ontario isn't necessary.  The first year I went it was about seeing the band at the Festival Theatre but the memories of that first year have very little to do with the band.  It is about all the amazing people I had met.  The second year I went the shows were the icing on the cake - oh right and the fact that the Saturday show was the best ever!

I feel for Patty.  I am really happy that Ryan & I were able to meet you for drinks when you were out last year.  It was the first chance I really had to visit with Patty and while I hadn't visited with you either I knew you from the board.  It must be really hard for her.

Thanks for taking the time to tell the stories.  I've said it before and I will say it again - it's the next best thing to being there.

Re: Thanks From Dizzy and Patty!!

Wow... I had to stop reading half-way through to go get some Kleenex! I was deeply touched by your account of this year's Stratford weekend and I just feel so blessed right now... I know I've said it many times before, but I still find it almost unbelievable to think that I have met so many awesome people through this site. Even though most of us live far apart, I know for a fact that my life would not be the same without you in it.

I know for a fact that Dan is very appreciative of the fact that the Crazy Dayz Band made him feel so welcomed - especially you, Peter! He really enjoyed playing with you!

It's too bad that someone chose to disrespect the non-smoking policy at the OEP. As I was reading your post, I had an "A-HA!!" moment. Poor Sammie was suffering from a terrible migraine on Saturday and Adèle & Paul offered their room so Sammie could have a rest. She went up, but came back down shortly after complaining that all she could smell was cigarette smoke. I found that odd, knowing that the establishment was non-smoking and I chalked it up to the fact that migraine sufferers tend to smell odd things that nobody else can smell. Now it all makes sense! She really was smelling cigarette smoke! I would expect behavior like that from a bunch of drunken teenagers maybe, but not grown adults. It was awfully disrespectful to other guests as well. I'm sure some of them must have been able to smell the smoke. Ah well! Maybe Randy will charge the offender's credit card an extra $500.00 for not obeying the rules. In fact, I hope he does!! What a nice thank-you for all that he's done to accomodate our group. Confused I know that rule was stated clearly on our hotel room door and I'm sure it's the same for any other hotel in Stratford.

I don't want to sound selfish, but I really hope that once you recover from Stratford '07, you'll reconsider your decision to not be involved in the music from here on out. It just wouldn't be the same without you, and to be honest, I can't think of very many people who would be as fair and patient as you've been. You bent over backwards to try and ensure that everyone got equal stage time and I can just imagine what a task that was for you to undertake! Anyway, if you decide to change your mind, Dan and I are here to help in ANY way we can!!

Thanks again for sharing your memories with us...

Well I guess I'm selfish too Bluegirl because that is what I was thinking while reading Dizzy's post.

Peter, You & Patty did an outstanding job, Thanks-you again!!!  Your sentiments are so sweet  Crying Into Tissueyou 2  are truly a blessing.

Re: Thanks From Dizzy and Patty!!

Though this was my first year, it was incredibly evident the hard work that Peter and Patty put into the arrangements and the music. I can only echo Dar and Lori's sentiments.  If my plan pans out, I'm hoping to spend more time in Stratford next year and if so I would be more than happy to help with anything I can.

Peter it what great to meet you, I wish I would have had more time to spend with everyone, I couldn't believe how fast the weekend flew by. It truly was one of the most incredible experiences for me and I am so happy that I was able to go. Everyone was so amazingly wonderful!!!

Ahhhh Peter, that was beautifully expressed. I regret not being able to sign that card. I assume I arrived too late on Saturday. Thank you Peter and Patty from the bottom of my heart for all of your effort!  It was the best Stratford weekend ever. I have to agree with what you said about ALL the musicians, but especially that Eastern farmer guy. Dan, you have unbelievable stage presence! MusicYes It was nice that you and Patty finally were able to relax Saturday night and just enjoy. You guys are the greatest!

Just when I thought the Stratford endorphins were wearing off (& the whole weekend was starting to seem like a dream), you brought it all back for me with this post, Peter.

Thank you! (Now where did I leave that kleenex? *SNIFF*)

Re: Thanks From Dizzy and Patty!!

Great recount of the weekend Peter.  It was my first Stratford experience and I felt guilty at first for dragging my Mom (Eileen) and sister (Cindi) along, although they have been BR fans back to the mid 80's when they were a bar band.

I don't know why I worried, everyone was so wonderful (no surprise) and the music at the M & G and after party was phenomenal.  Farmer Dan made my Mom feel really at home with his conversation during intermission about all the bands he has seen, and the ones that she had seen in the 60's.  Thanks Dan.  Hey!! Dan didn't sing 'Words'.  Also, about the smoke, when I walked out into the hall, I gasped and complained, and my Mom told me to stop being such a whiner.  I knew it wasn't my imagination, thanx for clarifying that Peter.

Again, EVERYONE is so wonderful and I feel blessed to have so many close friends, some I haven't even met yet!

I was just about to send you an e-mail, Lesley-Ann but when I saw your post I decided to reply here.

I wanted to tell you how much Dan enjoyed chatting with your mom!! He was telling me about her stories on the ride home from Stratford! I also have to say that I have no idea how old she is (and I'd never ask!) but man, does she look amazing!! Yes

Dizzy/Peter; well said !!!   Crazy Ed & Bru  (we've nicknamed ourselves 'the groove kings')really enjoyed the endless jamming with all members of the Crazies. We love our roles as the 'Baz & Glen' of the Greet & Meet. You can count on us next year......the BR material covered had some outstanding moments with the likes of Joe, Ryan, & Gobo doing great work....as well as the great keys and guitar work of our coordinators Peter & Patty.....and the cameo guests were really super.  It would be great to get together with some/any of the band-aids through the course of 2007....if you folks ever wanna convene in the london area....we have a studio/rehearsal room available...Keep in touch !

Re: Thanks From Dizzy and Patty!!

My turn!!! I just can't get over the fact that the weekend lived up to and surpassed everything I had hoped for! I have so many "favourite" moments that just thinking of one, another one pops into my head. One of the best moments for me was after we had returned to the OEP and Peter, you were singing Dark Angel. When you turned and sang those special words of love to Patty, well, like I told you, I just teared up.

It was such a wonderful gift getting to meet so many people from this board. And today as I drove passed the OEP a big ole grin appeared on my face! And, it was a good thing that it wasn't this weekend, cause we are in the midst of a pretty good snowstorm right now. And, this morning all of the downtown area was without power for a couple of hours! That would have made things a little more interesting, wouldn't it?

It was a joy and a pleasure to meet everyone! Funny, Blue Rodeo weekend is forever changed for me now!

Dizzy and Patty, I hope you will reconsider and play again next year.  It wouldn't be the same without you! And although it is a lot of work, I'm sure it's also as much fun for you to play as it is for us to listen to you! I think this year's M&G was the best (this was my fourth time) - it was nice to have a full band playing, and again great job by everybody Yes!  I was happy to see and hear more women singing this year! They all did great!

Hi Cathy!  It was great to meet you on the Thursday night and throughout the weekend as well!!

Oh and I have an idea - we should start a Farmer Dan Fan Club! Are you with me Lori?! LOL!

Hi Diane! It was so much fun to meet you! I was just so excited to have the chance to meet with you, Lori and our now famous Saint/Farmer Dan! I did learn something that night though! I'll offer this little bit of advise in case it might prove to be useful information to some other foggy brained soul! When meeting people for the very first time, don't order chicken wings, more specifically, do not order honey and garlic chicken wings! Very, very messy! There is just nothing pretty about it, they are just not a smart choice for first time meetings!!

Maybe we could have some t-shirts made that say "We love you Dizzy and Patty" and hope that they feel the love! I hope that the two of you will get up there and sing some songs for us. You both are just so wonderful to listen to. It's a rare thing in this world to see such a special couple that are in tune with each other. So, I hope that you will share your musical talents with us and at the same time just be able to relax and visit with everyone. I still think we need more than just a weekend!

Dan really just rocked the place! What a stage presence! It's just so cool to see someone who loves to sing and play! I think I know several people who would love to belong to the Farmer Dan fan club! Makes you wonder what would Lori do?

I agree totally, Dan really has an amazing stage presence, I think Simon Cowell would say he has the "it" factor.

Everyone was really great, I can't tell you how much I appreciate people who have musical talent, I always wished I did, but I don't so those who do impress the hell out of me.
