I noticed today that the "who's online" line was showing an absolutely huge number of guests, something like 150 at one point. Is this accurate? If so, any idea what's bringing them here?

Keep it simple

It must be the tour if the numbers ARE accurate. It could also still be the problems that are being worked out. If there is a substantial increase in numbers, I hope it's because more and more people are becoming fans or if they are fans, they're checking out the band for dates, info etc.  We need to make sure these boys hang around for quite some time don't we So if more and more people visit the site, go to shows etc, then hopefully the band will go on forever and ever and ever......  I'm not greedy am I

I've not notice that number but I have noticed the total number of members. Last spring we hit 5,000. Now we are over 8,000????

Since we've been experiencing problems with the birthday list and the pre-sale, I think this is due to technical problems.

I'd guess it has a lot to do with spam bots.  They are tough buggers to fight off.  Even when they don't get through, they still can screw with page counts and such.  This site uses an established board software program, so bots know the places to hit.
