I've been catching up on some of the other music released on the quite cool Chapel Hill, North Carolina Yep Roc Records label lately and there are some very impressive musicians under the Yep Roc umbrella who are creating very exciting and occasionally just plain weird music. Kind of sums up our beloved Sadies who just keep creating exciting and occasionally weird music. I thought that I'd start a thread where from time to time, I would spotlight an album by one of the Yep Roc artists. According to Wikipedia, Yep Roc Records has been around since 1996, and I'm just beginning to take in the full scope of their catalog. They've definitely got a musical vision (although I'm not quite sure what it is yet).
But anyway, one Yep Roc group I will eagerly recommend right now is Tres Chicas. Tres Chicas is not a Latino band, but rather, they are Caitlin Cary formerly of Whiskeytown, Tonya Lamm and Lynn Blakey. Each lady was/is with another band, but when they get together and perform and record as Tres Chicas, they are one of the sweetest sounding alt.country harmony groups this side of Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris.
To date they have released two full length records, 2004's "Sweetwater" and last year's "Bloom, Red and the Ordinary Girl". I bought "Bloom, Red and the Ordinary Girl" last year when Tower Records was going out of business and among the dozens of cds I got in that buying binge, it was one of the few that really stood out and that I could enjoy playing all the way through without getting bored or hitting the skip button. I bought "Sweetwater" a few months ago, and it is every bit as good as "Bloom" Theses ladies can sing and and write pretty good songs too. Check out their bio over at Yep Roc.
I'd love to see a show with Tres Chicas and The Sadies, now that would be quite awesome. In my opinion, Caitlin Cary emerges as the real talent of Whiskeytown and both of these Yep Roc records prove it.
