The Sadies' Yep Roc Label Mates...

I've been catching up on some of the other music released on the quite cool Chapel Hill, North Carolina Yep Roc Records label lately and there are some very impressive musicians under the Yep Roc umbrella who are creating very exciting and occasionally just plain weird music. Kind of sums up our beloved Sadies who just keep creating exciting and occasionally weird music. I thought that I'd start a thread where from time to time, I would spotlight an album by one of the Yep Roc artists. According to Wikipedia, Yep Roc Records has been around since 1996, and I'm just beginning to take in the full scope of their catalog. They've definitely got a musical vision (although I'm not quite sure what it is yet).

But anyway, one Yep Roc group I will eagerly recommend right now is Tres Chicas. Tres Chicas is not a Latino band, but rather, they are Caitlin Cary formerly of Whiskeytown, Tonya Lamm and Lynn Blakey. Each lady was/is with another band, but when they get together and perform and record as Tres Chicas, they are one of the sweetest sounding alt.country harmony groups this side of Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris.

To date they have released two full length records, 2004's "Sweetwater" and last year's "Bloom, Red and the Ordinary Girl". I bought "Bloom, Red and the Ordinary Girl" last year when Tower Records was going out of business and among the dozens of cds I got in that buying binge, it was one of the few that really stood out and that I could enjoy playing all the way through without getting bored or hitting the skip button. I bought "Sweetwater" a few months ago, and it is every bit as good as "Bloom" Theses ladies can sing and and write pretty good songs too. Check out their bio over at Yep Roc.

I'd love to see a show with Tres Chicas and The Sadies, now that would be quite awesome. In my opinion, Caitlin Cary emerges as the real talent of Whiskeytown and both of these Yep Roc records prove it.

Cool thread, Peter, and I think the Sadies have signed on with a darn good company.  I was pleasantly surprised to read that Yep Roc has 4 artists nominated for Grammy Awards this year.  One of whom is Peter Case, Buffalo native and former front-man for The Plimsouls.

Check out Yep-Roc's top-10 best-selling artists, pretty impressive list.  Let's hope the Sadies keep climbing up.

    Nick Lowe - Convincer
    Reverend Horton Heat - Revival
Minus 5 - Down With Wilco
    Paul Weller - Illumination
    Dave Alvin - Ashgrove
John Doe - Forever Hasn't Happened Yet
    Los Straitjackets - Velvet Touch
Southern Culture on the Skids - Mojo Box
    Robyn Hitchcock - Spooked
Bob Mould - Body of Song

Yep Roc also has Jim Lauderdale. I saw him perform at Lees during Canadian music week [with John Doe, Rock Plaza Central and the Sadies] and he's fantastic. He was just nominated for a Grammy as well... I love that you can stream so many albums [including Lauderdale's, Doe's and the Sadies] on the Yep Roc website -- great feature. Robyn Hitchcock's new boxset: I Wanna Go Backwards also awesome... and streamable. http://yeproc.com/artist_info.php?artistId=171
And all the drunks just stumble by And mumble their abuse

Re: The Sadies' Yep Roc Label Mates...

Yes, a Buffalo boy makes good! No Depression has really been promoting Peter Case's new album and I'm very pleased to see that he's on Yep Roc Records along with John Doe, and Jim Lauderdale. I went to the artists link over at Yep Roc and they currently have 88 artists signed to the label. Very impressive for a fledgling company.

I like their ethos of signing old and new acts, so as to achieve a greater diversity in the type of music that they produce. I was a huge fan of Chicgo's Bloodshot Records way back in 1999-2000, but I got the impression that Bloodshot was going for a more punk brand of alt.country music. Not that that was entirely bad, but that was kind of all that they were releasing. Of course it was a good training ground for The Sadies, but I think that The Sadies will get alot more promotion and a wider audience with their affiliation with Yep Roc. It seems that North Carolina is a very happening music scene.Cool

Subject for further research: Robyn Hitchcock...truly one strange dude who has made some immensely cool rock music in his career.
