Jim should write a song called "300 feet away" about the restraining order he should probably take out on certain fans that stalk him.

Hey RockerJessy, I think they did that because. I Remember on the Small Miricles tour thing that Bazil said that they got in " Long drawn out arguments about a song" So I think A few likes the one instrumental and the others liked the other one.

Or there is also the possability that Where I was before is  on Piano and just for studio and 3 Hours Away is for live concerts.

I think the songs were recorded that way on purpose so they could target broader listening audiences. I know here in Ottawa, "3 Hours Away" was released on Y101, the country music radio station and "Where I was Before" was released on Majic 100, which is the easy listening station. Makes sense. They get more airplay that way. Smile

Jim explains the two versions in an article posted in the Small Miracles tour reviews/articles thread.  Here is the relevant part of the article which I thought I would post here in case it is missed in the other thread.

A song so nice, they play it twice.

Or so it seems on Blue Rodeo's new album Small Miracles. The fourth song Three Hours Away is revisited as the final track, albeit with different instrumentation and a different title, Where I Was Before. Jim Cuddy anticipates the inevitable question.

"What's up with that?" he asks.

The explanation reveals a bit about the inner workings of the veteran Canadian band. Cuddy wrote two versions of the song and was torn between them. He played both for the band at the recording session. Most liked Three Hours Away, which has a more soothing, countrified sound thanks to the pedal steel. That's the one they decided on. But Greg Keelor and co-producer Chris Shreenan-Dyck liked the other. On his own, Shreenan-Dyck put together a second version, replacing the steel with French horn.

"I really liked it," Cuddy said.

They decided to keep both because they give the album a thematic arc -- "this notion of how constant travel unsettles your life. And how there's this incredibly scary anticipation of re-entering your life when you get back from the road." The first version is hopeful. The second has an air of weary surrender.

"It didn't seem like such a stupid idea to reprise it at the end in a more sad way," says Cuddy.

Greg Keelor met Jim Cuddy and then I met you people. Serendipity is a marvellous thing.

"I guess I don't know if I believe in God but
I know a song can make you feel good once
    in a while." ~Greg Keelor~

Interesting! Thanks Hazy! They still did get to release the songs on both pop and country radio stations though. Just not purposely like most other artists are doing nowadays. Wink

this isnt really on the topic but that has to be one of the funniest pictures ive ever seen. the cat really has the guitar players stance and doesnt even have to look at the fret board when hes shredding. impressive.
