Thanks Ann.  I didn't know about this show.  I can't make it to this show but it looks great.   Here's the blurb from the Chan Centre's (great venue) website:

    The Great Canadian Songbook

    Sunday April 15/2007
    3:00 pm
    Chan Shun Concert Hall

Presented by the CBC Radio Orchestra

    Alain Trudel, conductor
    Veda Hille, vocalist
    Sarah Slean, vocalist (left)
    Ron Sexsmith, vocalist
    Marc Déry, vocalist

Four Great Canadian Songwriters: Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, Buffy St. Marie and Serge Fiori.

Four Great Canadian Singers: Sarah Slean, Ron Sexsmith, Veda Hille and Marc Déry.

Four Great Canadian Composer/Arrangers: Phil Dwyer, Glenn Buhr, Giorgio Magnanensi and Alain Trudel.

    One unforgettable afternoon.

This promises to be an inspired celebration of a great Canadian musical legacy. The concert features some of the best singers of today performing the works of legendary songwriters in original orchestral arrangements created especially for this event.

Thanks Hazy, I didn't know that this was not a purely Ron show but what a great show it will still be!  With all that talent, it can't be anything but a good one.

Ron's playing at Massey Hall on May 4th.  Any other board people  going?Smile

    Re: Ron Sexsmith on Tour

Hey Ray,  I saw Ron at Massey Hall last Friday and Saturday night in Mount Forest (which is practically in the back yard).  Here's my blurby bit:

What a great night at Massey Hall! It was a mildly cool, clear evening that topped a beautiful windless sunny day and the excitement in the crowd outside the hall was palpable. A few scalpers were hawking tickets and a long line-up of people snaked around the side of the building as they waited to pick up or purchase their tickets. Concert-goers of every age were filing in through the doors for the long-awaited annual Ron Sexsmith concert.

The opening act Amy Millan put on a really great show, warming up an already receptive audience. She and a collection of about seven talented musicians played a wonderful forty minutes or so. Each number was treat upon treat. She was joined by Jenny Whitely for a song and the resulting two voices in harmony were just beautiful. That was a stunning opener. Amy recalled the recent release of Neil Young's Live at Massey Hall CD which gave us all pause to reflect on the beautiful quality of the hall's acoustics and faded grandeur.Smile

Something seemed very familiar about the bass player to my friend and me, though I couldn't place him until he was introduced by Amy. It was Andre Ethier whom we had seen open for the Sadies several times! We're more accustomed to seeing his head bent over a four-string tenor guitar than the fiddle bass he sported last night. Obviously, he is a multi-talented musician as were many of the musicians in Amy's band which featured keyboards, drums, acousic guitar, electric guitar, banjo, trombone, lap steel and saw as well as the bass.

Finally, after a short intermission it was time for the man of the hour - our own Ron Sexsmith! The band came out to much applause which grew as Ron came out to join them - resplendent in a white suit and white bucks! After waving a cheery hello to all in attendance, he swung into How on Earth and was joined by the band after a few bars. Ron welcomed everyone to the show and asked how we all liked his new suit. He advised he was getting in touch with his "inner rock star". Big Smile

What followed was one of those long-awaited evenings of music and song to satisfy the hungry hearts of the most discerning of Ron fans. There were no disappointments from the setlist to the arrangements. Just a great show.

We were treated to two great drummers in Don Kerr and Mark Marash) and occasionally they were both on stage at the same time. Don joined in with some beautiful cello such as on Gold in Them Hills and added shaker on Strawberry Blonde (I think - couldn't see to write my notes - too dark -so I'm relying on memory Wink)

Dragonfly on Bay Street was delivered in a very upbeat, Mangione-esque style I thought. Dusty Things featured Ron on piano - a very nice grand piano - and he finished with a few flourishes. Dave Matheson picked up the acoustic guitar for this one and added that very nice ringing ascending crescendo element that the acousitc guitar adds to that song imho. Great performances from Jason Mercer and Tim Bovaconti at the show too. Tim and Don provided harmonizing back-up vocals for Ron on a few songs. Ron referred to them as "the Ronettes" to which they smiled. Smile

Ron sang On a Whim after mentioning that John McDermott had released an album this year by the same name, featuring only songs by Ron which Ron described as a very nice thing to have happen. Big SmileI love the way Ron sings this - it causes me to listen to Rarities over and over again because it is the first song and I can't switch CDs when I hear it starting. I'll probably be alright eventually. lol.

I feel the same way about Secret Heart which (although very nicely rendered by Feist) I love most when sung by Ron. I suppose that is only right since he wrote it to begin with, but I love also the casual, melodic air he gives it. So now I'm gushing.

The evening was totally enjoyable without any detractions whatsoever and all too soon it was time to point the deer whistles north on Airport Road with Rarities in the player and a song in my heart. Big Smile

    Re: Ron Sexsmith on Tour

Ron will also be appearing on June 1st at Town Hall in New York City.  Since you're not terribly familiar with his stuff, I would recommend that you buy his latest CD Time Being and/or the previous one Retriever before you go see him.  You won't be disappointed.Smile

Thanks for the suggestions Ann. You know he played a local theatre near home last year and I missed that one so I'm really looking forward to makng one or both of these shows. I don't se him listed on the Town Hall sight. That nigth is Bright Eyes and Gillian Welch with "special guests". Maybe he's special that night.

I think I remember hearing about this appearance as a guest spot with Bright Eyes and Gilliam Welch.  It should be a good one if Ron is appearing.Smile

Hmmmm... May 3 2008 at Massey Hall... it's a Saturday!  I should really check out Ron live.  Your post in the US fall tour thread about Nick Lowe being a fan has whetted (sp?) my appetite, Ann Smile

Yes, sooner or later you discover that everyone is a fan of Ron Sexsmith!  I have my tickets for Massey Hall already.  There is a free concert at the Niagara Winefest on Sept 23rd if you are willing to take a little drive down to St. Catherines.

So many good shows....so little money. Must chose wisely. Hmmmmm, maybe I can sell my cd collection...oh wait someone's already doing that. Well I think I may still try both dates.

Oh and the Old 97's are doing a free show in lower manhattan either tomorrow night or the following Monday night. Pretty sure it's the 17th so that would make for a busy week and a half.

Just thought I would re-post the east coast tour dates for Ron Sexsmith since he is out there this week.  For the moment he is still touring with Time Being, his latest album, on the setlist so it would be a good time to catch him if you really like that album (and I can recommend it highly).

Apparently Ron Sexsmith will also be appearing at The Blue Olive tonight October 15th, in St. John, New Brunswick, (that trickiest of all Canadian geography quiz question name places and the one that you least hope your travel agent mixes up for you).  I don't know what The Blue Olive is, but it sounds small and, by extension, like a great place to see Ron Sexsmith!Big Smile
