Well, I have a red flag with the Big C flying over my car window!!!  LOL!  It looks like every second car on the street has one also.  Everyone seems to be going a little nuts in Montreal, don't you find, Linda?  I thought it was so great the other night at the last game of the season when the crowd at the Bell Centre stayed until the very end of the game, applauding and cheering the team for the great year they had.  There was not one empty seat! I actually got tears in my eyes when all the players got to centre ice holding their hockey sticks in the air to salute the fans after the game!

HABS ALL THE WAY! Big Smile

    Re: Stanley, where are you?

Since Edmonton didn't make it to the playoffs this year, I'm going to root for any Canadian team but Calgary (and maybe Ottawa).

So in other words, you're cheering for Montreal? Stick out tongue (I wouldn't waste your time cheering for Ottawa, they're not going very far this year! Wink)

I'm pulling for Montreal myself...I thought it was pretty cool how they've gone from not making the playoffs last year (thanks to my Leafs beating them in the last game of the season last year, of course!) to first in the East in one year - they're definitely doing something right, plus Carey Price is playing amazingly in goal. I've never really had anything against the Montreal Canadiens, even as a Leafs fan - one of my friends' cousins played for the Habs during their Stanley Cup season of 1986 and also when they made it to the final in 1989 vs. Calgary - and I've cheered for the Habs in the past, so I have no problem supporting them this year in the playoffs as well...plus, Art, if you're reading this, in honour of our annual CFL playoffs deal (i.e. if the Argos make it to the Grey Cup, you cheer for the Argos, and if the Als make it, I cheer for them), I decided that since the Leafs didn't make it, I'll cheer for the Habs! Wink

Great game last night, although I thought the fans were a little premature singing the "Ole ole ole ole" song (or whatever it's called) after the second Montreal goal, since there was still alot of game left...you don't want something like that to come back and bite you on the bum before the game's even over, but fortunately for them, it didn't.

Go Pens!!! Here's hoping for a quick 4 game sweep!

    Re: Stanley, where are you?

You’re making a wise choice by cheering for the Habs, Christian! Yes

Well, the Bruins’ tactics of trying to intimidate and provoke the Habs into taking bad penalties almost worked.  Alex Kovalev redeemed himself by scoring the winning goal in overtime last night Big Smile.  One thing I realize is that hockey players not only have to be skilled and fit physically, but they also need to be strong in character and stay focus and not retaliate every time they get hit.  The Bruins played better last night than on Thursday. The third game is tonight in Boston.  A lot of Montreal hockey fans are making the trip to Boston.  The Boston newspapers mentioned that 30 to 35% of tickets sold were bought by Montreal fans which means 1 out of 3 people in the crowd will be a Habs fan.   Man, I love the playoffs!

    Re: Stanley, where are you?

I expected to see everybody's first-round predictions! I know everybody's bullish on Montreal, and I have no doubt they'll have an easy time getting rid of Boston. but I don't see them making the finals...I'd pick the Rangers or the Penguins. I think sooner or later their unexpected run will come to an end.

out west I'm hoping my second-favourite (American) team, San Jose, will finally live up to their potential. my first round upsets are Stars over the Ducks (mostly out of spite!), the Avs over the Wild and the Flyers over the Capitals. Washington played very well in not giving up after surrendering the tying goals last game, but I still think it's a question of experience. I see it being a bit like Sens-Pens last year (how times have changed for both!). although I really like what Huet's doing for the Caps, I think the team just doesn't have the grit and experience to make it past the first round this year. but wouldn't it be great if the eastern final was Crosby vs Ovechkin?

    Re: Stanley, where are you?

Well, the Sens could very well be swept tonight. I'm hoping that that won't be the case -- a 4-1 series victory for the Pens would allow the beleaguered lads in red to salvage SOME dignity -- but I'm not holding my breath. Boyfriend dearest will be disappointed, of course, but it won't be the end of the world for him.

I had to laugh, though -- at the grocery store this afternoon, I saw a cutout of a Senator (part of a hockey-themed 12-pack-of-pop display) over whose head someone had placed a paper bag with two eye-holes cut out. Stick out tongue Yeah, Sens fans are notoriously quick to criticize the team when they're down, but that was just funny.

Anyway, I'm a Habs girl (family from Montreal, and the Habs won the Cup the year I was born -- this isn't just me bandwagon-jumping), so go Montreal!

Cheer for Pittsburgh to beat Philadelphia. At least that is what boyfriend dearest will be doing -- he hates Philly even more than he does the Leafs. (He's a Sens boy, but of course that dream was dashed ages ago. Stick out tongue)

    Re: Stanley, where are you?

Of course, I'm very disappointed that the Habs have been eliminated by the Flyers. What a game on Saturday though! The Habs should have won more games the way they were playing, but the Flyers took advantage of every break they got.  And their goalie Martin Biron did exceptionally well.  The Habs were not expected to go this far and they probably would have been eliminated by the Penguins (my favourite team now) anyway.  Next year will be the Canadiens' 100th anniversary! Yes I'm looking forward to it! Smile

    Re: Stanley, where are you?

I was cheering for Montreal as well, so of course it's disappointing that once again, the finals will be decided with non-Canadian based teams. However, I still take solace in the fact that regardless of who wins, the cup will at least get to come to Canada when members of the winning team get their one day with the cup during the off-season. It was for that very reason I had no problem last season with Anaheim winning the cup, because they had more Canadian players than any other team in the NHL (that, and my hatred for the Ottawa Senaturds...I mean, Senators! Stick out tongue hehehe)

As for Montreal, they got outplayed, plain and simple. Biron played exceptionally well throughout the series - imho, he was the only goaltending problem Montreal was faced with, and not Price/Halak. Plus anytime you spend almost an entire series trying to play catch-up as Montreal did (only once in the entire series did they have a lead, and even that quickly evaporated), you can't expect to win a series. I think Montreal's very fortunate that they didn't get swept, actually. So, then there were 4 - my predictions for the conference finals:

    Pittsburgh vs. Philadelphia

This is gonna be a physical series, no question. Both teams made fairly quick work of their second round opponents, each winning their respective series' in five games, so neither team really has that extra advantage of having more rest than their opponent. Pittsburgh's been great so far, but I believe this series will come down to goaltending - to which, I give Philadelphia the edge in goal with Biron over Fleury. I like the Penguins so far this year in the playoffs - any team that sweeps Ottawa out in the first round is ok in my book! - but the longer this series goes, the more it probably favours the Flyers - and that's my prediction. Flyers in seven.

    Detroit vs. Dallas

I must confess that this season I didn't watch alot of Western Conference hockey, so I really don't know as much about how these two teams have been so far in the playoffs other than what I've read in the papers. I do however know that both teams have been perennial playoff contenders in the Western Conference this decade. Another series that will probably come down to goaltending. Detroit is a great team, as always, but they will only go as far as Hasek can carry them, especially at his age and stage in his career. However, Detroit also has that killer instinct when it comes to the playoffs, especially at this stage in the season. Detroit in seven.

I'm hoping that both conference finals go the distance because, I dunno about you guys, maybe it's just me, but I feel that this year's playoffs have been sadly devoid of any real excitement or drama - last night's Dallas/San Jose 4 overtime game notwithstanding (which I wasn't able to watch anyway because I had to be up early for work this morning). Anyone else agree?

    Re: Stanley, where are you?

Yes, but they did catch up a few times, Christian.  I mean scoring two goals within 37 seconds in the 3rd period to tie the game only to have one of your players take a stupid penalty (Steve Bégin)  Angry And of course, the Flyers scored on that power play to win the game.  Now that was dramatic for me!  LOL!

Talking about power plays, I don’t know what happened to Montreal’s power play but it was non-existent for most of the series.  They were doing so well during the regular season with it though.  Also, the Canadiens have dominated the shots in a lot of the games, but the name of the game is still putting the puck in the net and the Flyer's goaltending with Martin Biron was outstanding as I said before. Latendresse hitting the crossbar with not much time to go in the 3rd period on Saturday pretty much sums up the series for the Habs. I don’t know how many times they hit the posts! The Flyers got the breaks and capitalized on every one of them while the Habs couldn’t buy one when they needed it.

If there is any glimmer of hope in these playoffs for the Habs, it is that their young players have gained valuable experience. They overcame all expectations by winning the Eastern Conference - perhaps this playoff run was a little premature given their experience.
