    Red Cross Anti-Bullying Contest

Hey everyone, just wanted to let you know that my nephew entered a contest at school for anti-bullying, and they won first place in all of Canada.  He's the one that stands up to bullying

I thought that was an incredibly good video.  It said so much in just a few seconds.  Really well done.

It MIGHT be on MuchMusic, the details are still be worked out. Apparently the video has been spotted as a commercial, though.

By the way, I wanted to smack your nephew after filming those scenes. He's like filming a dead person. No emotions at all! Oh well, it all worked out. ;)

FYI, I'm the guy that did the story/directed/filmed/edited/pretty much did everything on the video...I was curious to see where it's come up since it was officially announced as the winner, hence why I am randomly posting here.

Are you joking?  If so it's not funny and if not it's an ignorant comment to post here.

    Re: Red Cross Anti-Bullying Contest

I thought he was joking (teenage humour) when I first read it but really I think that the show of no or little emotion was very true to life as far as filming teenage boys goes.  To me, it said that what's on the inside and what you're going to do about a situation are what counts - not being some extroverted Disney teen character.  It was simply his presence which made a difference to the situations.  It is sometimes typical for some guys to show a fairly limited array of emotions and to generally keep their emotions inside.  Perhaps even more typical for teenagers.  Just my two cents.

As far as flat affect - have you ever seen an Atom Egoyan movie? lol.

    Re: Red Cross Anti-Bullying Contest

Well if anyone knows Joseph, my nephew, then they know that's the way he is.

As for filming him with little or no emotion, what the heck are you suppose to be doing in a corridor at school by yourself  while reading?  Jumping for joy and smiling? ------especially when you realize that a bully is coming your way?   hmmmmm to me, that would look very strange Wink I think the lack of emotion is what makes you realize that there's trouble, that there's something brewing and you know, maybe HIS lack of emotions is what made the judges realize that it was more "authentic" then any other entries.  It wasn't flashy or false cause really, do you want to look happy while at school reading in the hallway?

However, it was done well, it got the point across in just a matter of seconds and it did it with just emotions (or lack of)Wink  cause there was no verbal exchange, there was no fighting brought on, just the act of standing up for a person  being picked on.

Did you ever think that maybe Joseph was ACTING and in his ACTING he was pondering what to do? The look on his face was him being deep in thought as to what is the RIGHT thing to do here? What would happen to him? What would happen if he doesn't step in? What would his friends think? What would be the repercussions if he doesn't do what he feels is RIGHT. --------Just a thought? Big Smile

    Re: Red Cross Anti-Bullying Contest

The impression I got is that the kid who posted is one of Ann's nephew's friends or classmates. According to his profile, he's only 17. I don't think he meant any harm by his comment. My son and his friends joke around like that all the time.

As for young men showing little or no emotion, well I have to agree with that! Stephen's 18 now and it's hard for me to read him most of the time. He's very open with me in the sense that we have great communication, but as far as outward emotions go, he generally keeps them to himself. I think it's pretty common for guys that age.

Anyway, congrats to your nephew, Ann! Good job! Smile

Lori, the boy in the video is my nephew Big Smile  and I don't think that the guy that posted meant any harm in it either.

Boys are very hard to read, yet teenage boys, man, it's almost impossible.

OMG! Sorry JAM! I was posting on half a cup of coffee!! Stick out tongue

Well, CONGRATS to YOUR nephew Irene!! (I'll get it right sooner or later! Ha! Ha!)

I think as moms, we automatically know when something is up with our boys, whether they show it or not... I don't know about you, but I always get what I call the "mommy feeling" when something's up with Stephen. If I ask him about it, I'll get a lot of "Meh" and "Oh nothing Mom" answers, but eventually I always get to the bottom of things. It can be frustrating though to have to fish and prod. With Stephen, the more a person does that, the more he clams up. He really takes after his dad in that sense (and I don't mean that in a disrespectful way). I've always been the type of person who wears her heart on her sleeve, so sometimes I need to take a step back and realize and respect that not everyone is like me...

Seeing as how I was directing that at Joseph's aunt, I can see how you would think that as an insult, but an ignorant comment? I disagree. I thought the winking emoticon at the end of the statement would have shown that I was being sarcastic, but I guess not.

Anyways, let me reiterate what I meant, Joe is camera shy. :P We kept telling him, when you get up and walk over start talking with the kid being bullied or something. Don't just stand there and stare at the locker.

Did you ever think that maybe Joseph was ACTING and in his ACTING he was pondering what to do?

That's the thing, he didn't really know what to do, but neither did we really. I apologize, emotion was a bad  choice of wording. Like I said previously, I was referring more to the fact that when he walked over to the boy, he didn't really show any sort of connection that he was actually attempting to stop the bully as opposed to just walking over there.

I didn't think a little joke would get so completely blown out of the water. I guess no one caught the irony of me wanting to "smack" him while filming an anti-bullying video. :P

Anyways, now to disappear back into the void and leave the Blue Rodeo fans to discuss their topics. ;)

Haldir, I think the irony was picked up on!

The video was pretty cool. I guess its good that they are takin gmeasures to counter bullying...especially if its a problem.

    Re: Red Cross Anti-Bullying Contest

Haldir, I know that Joseph is camera shy. When I saw the filmclip, I saw Joseph as the Joseph I know, so that's the way he is. He shows very little emotion for sure. But it worked out real well for sure. Maybe that's what the judges wanted to see, someone that would not normally stand up for himself, yet stand up to protect someone else from getting hurt. You know, no big jock or anything, just a normal teenaged boy.

I guess maybe because Joseph didn't say anything to the guy that was about to get bullied, it made it clear that he went there for one purpose and that purpose ONLY, he would not otherwise even gone to that locker. So it spoke volumes on that act alone. You see, we might interpret something MORE only cause we see it from another perspective. You being the writer, editer etc, you see it the way you wrote it to be, but we see maybe something through different pair of eyes. Either way, the word got across in a phenomenal way, you did a great job doing your part and so did the rest of the crew, Congrats

Oh and I did get the SMACK irony part LOL  I knew that it wasn't meant to be hurtful, just a play on words sort of. However, sometimes it just takes reading the post over to realize where someone is coming from. My friends were just protecting me Big Smile  They didn't want to have my feelings hurt, cause this is a close knit community and we're all very protective of each otherBig Smile  Thanks to everyone who STOOD UP for me ----in case I was being bulliedYesBig Smile
