    Belleville May 8, 2008

Fantastic show! But it's late and I must sleep in order to be at work in the morning. I will post a review then but I will tell you that the set list is exactly as it was for the third show in Peterborough. A grand time was had by all! Stacey

    Re: Belleville May 8, 2008

The May 8th show was a "fantastic show".  The set list was the same as the other Belleville shows and probably all 3 Showplace shows too.  A great way to start with the acoustic bit and Glenn playing a snare with a pair of brushes.  I think the overall presentation by the band and the Light man was fantastic.  I also think it was too loud for the small Theatre and it got louder as the night went on.  A band really never knows what things sound like for the crowd - they only get the stage sounds plus whatever they want in their monitor or in-ear mixes.  Not only was it too loud, I believe the sound guy didn't do the music justtice by mixing it the way he did.  I've been to several shows and I've also been somewhat involved with live sound production and recording and I've grown to appreciate the talent of a good sound man.  For example, when Jim sings at the piano, and then at his microphone with his guitar both should sound the same, however they weren't even close - at the piano he was way louder and there was a lot more reverb - now if he'd heard this the way we did he would not have liked it and there is no way whatsoever that he heard it the same way in his in-ear monitors.

Don't get me wrong here - I love the band and the music and the set list they came up with for this tour was fantastic.  I just think they should get a couple wireless guitars and come out front for sound check so they can hear what all of us are going to hear.  They are touring with a top of the line state of the art sound rig and there's no reason why it can't sound the way it should.

    Re: Belleville May 8, 2008

I found your comments very interesting, Fleeter!  Usually I am the one complaining about the sound being too loud!  I was pleasantly surprised by the third show at Peterborough, as I was in front of the amps, and the sound was comfortable to the ears.  I had taken ear-plugs, just in case, but found they weren't required.  I even stopped to tell the sound guys that they did a great job that night!  Apparently they were still smarting from the previous noise complaint mentioned in the press not long ago, because they asked if I was with the local paper!

Now that you mention it though, I also noticed that Jim's voice sounded different while he was using the mic at the piano.  It was louder, and somewhat sharp sounding, though not as piercing as I have heard it in the past. However, that was the only sound problem that night, to my great relief!  Don't know what's up with their sound techs, or why they can't get it right from one venue to the next (or one mic to the next!).  Anyway, I'm sorry to read that you didn't get to enjoy the show the way you would have liked.  Perhaps you might try another venue next time, if you are able to.

I carry with me the memory of a field I once knew, of a night so full of stars that I was left humbled by it's endless beauty. I know that whatever the cost, life is worth living. So bring it on...I can take it.
