Not sure how things work down your way katie, but up here, you can visit a head hunter who will take down your info and job preferences. Then, they will act as a go between for jobs that never make it to the public eye. The agent will contact you, in an ongoing fashion, with a pre-agreed upon fictitious name to advise you of any positions which might be of interest to you personally. Then, you can decline, or accept, the opportunity to meet with the prospective employer as part of a short list of candidates.
Other than that, I'd say, make your desires known TO YOU (i.e. make a list of things you want/don't want to make the choice more specific in your own mind. To with, dare to dream, but be specific about details.
