Hey Greg Keelor, Do You Have this Record!?

Last Sunday I was doing my usual Long Island flea market thing and one of the vendors at a place near the south shore, had a bunch of cds in a shoe box. Wasn't expecting much, so I quickly flipped through it until I got to one and I really had to restrain myself from screaming out "yee haaw!" It was a mint copy of the 1989 Rhino compilation record "Fairy Tales & Fantasies" by Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood. I paid a buck for it and quickly high tailed it out of there, as I knew the disc was and is worth a fortune. I mean I'm talking Beatles butcher cover territory here. Well it's going for alot because it is out of print, rare and because the songs on it are so good. If you want to hear where Greg gets his inspiration for alot of his mysterious and spooky lyrics and vocal stylings, check out Lee Hazlewood. I had never heard of this fellow until Greg mentioned him at a meet and greet and when Blue Rodeo also covered one of Hazlewood's songs, was it "Some Velvet Morning"? I also read about Hazlewood in Greg's List of Music You Should Hear on Amazon.

I cannot describe how good this record is! I believe that most of the tunes on this record you can download from iTunes or something, but if you do nothing else this summer while we're waiting for Blue Rodeo's next 'album', by all means listen to some Lee Hazlewood and even better check out his way cool duets with Nancy Sinatra. These folks were alt. country even before Gram Parsons and the Flying Burritto Brothers. For once I'm speechless...This record is nothing short of a revelation, and I didn't think that there were too many of those left that I hadn't already heard. I'm a Believer! Well that was the Monkees, but darn you have to listen to this music.

Greg, I know you have that import Lee Hazlewod compilation disc, but if you don't have this one with the Lee & Nancy duets, let me know, and I'll burn a copy for you!CoolCool Greg, you do have good taste in music. Thanks man for turning me on to Lee Hazlewood!

What an awesome find, Peter!! I hope Greg sees your post! I have a funny feeling that the guys DO read the board from time to time (despite what people say to the contrary).

I know that at Stratford '06 (was it '06? the year they did the live CD thing), BR covered Lee Hazelwood's "Run Boy Run"...but I suppose they could have covered "Some Velvet Morning" at a different show. Smile

Greg covered Trouble is a Lonesome Town at one of his shows - might have been at his Lee's Palace show in 2005 (?).Smile

edit: I checked and Trouble is a Lonesome Town is the name of the Lee Hazelwood album that Run Boy Run is from according to what I heard at this show:

edit.  oops. the whole thing is kind of long.  The show was Mt. Forest from January, 2006.  Here's the quote from my post.

"Then Greg surprised and delighted everyone with his Lee Hazelwood cover Run Boy Run. He mentioned at Saturday's show that it was from Trouble is a Lonesome Town, one of his favourite albums."

Hey there folks... Greg did "Trouble is a Lonesome Town" at the Horseshoe in April 2002.  I was there.  Some idiot called out "Do some Blue Rodeo songs".  I almost went over there and slapped him.  But Greg, seasoned professional that he is, completely ignored the heckler and continued with Lee Hazelwood.  Thanks for a great evening, Greg!

And you are right Peter, Lee Hazelwood rocks!!  My favourite by him is "Jacskon".

Re: Hey Greg Keelor, Do You Have this Record!?

I swear there was one Blue Rodeo show I attended where some heckler yelled out, "Play Freebird, man!" It was so funny that the heckler even got a chuckle from the guys on stage...who were definitely not Lynyrd Skynyrd!

And speaking about covering good music, if Jim Cuddy is reading this, I wonder whether he ever considered covering or whether he ever has covered, "Comin' Back to Me" by The Jefferson Airplane. It's definitely a song I am sure Blue Rodeo could do justice to, with Jim singing lead vocals. If you've never heard it, it's more of a psychedelic folk rock ballad as opposed to the harder rocking stuff that the Airplane were generally known for.
