    James Gray sighting

Every now and again, I run a little google search for James. He disappeared while I was on a BR hiatus, and I've always wondered what happened to him. He disappeared so completely that I thought that maybe he was ill, or was playing with bands too obscure for media coverage, or had dropped out of music altogether. Anyways, I found this.

(Sorry, nothing I do makes the link go live.)

I didn't know his dad was a member of The Travellers, did you?

Hmm... Interesting. You're right. He did seem to disappear off the face of the earth after he left Blue Rodeo. Actually, a friend of mine saw him busking outside a Subway shop in Toronto one night last year. He was playing "I Think I Love You" on the accordion. Tongue Tied

    Wow... that sounds rather sad.

    Re: James Gray sighting

I remember when James disappeared because it happened at the beginning of a tour.   AG was at the Prince George show and called Laurel to say James was gone and some other guy was on keyboards.  A few nights earler James had played at another show so it seemed like a decision was made quite quickly.  I personally prefer Bob Packwood.  Yes

I like Bob P, but sometimes miss James' more romantic sound.

I was just listening to some of the older stuff, and James' sound really shaped some of the songs. They're quite different from the versions I heard at Malkin last week.

    Re: James Gray sighting

James Gray hasn't disappeared from view completely.  Just last week, my husband saw him in Kensington Market, carrying what looked like a bag of laundry.  He also does the occasional gig with Chris Bottomley (http://www.chrisbottomley.com/).

The tragedy of life doesn't lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach.

    Re: James Gray sighting

Well, that's good. Maybe he's just taking a step back to enjoy life. He's probably been on the road since adulthood, if not before, given who his dad is. Thanks everybody.

    What exactly is 'busking'?

I too prefer Bob P. Whatever happened with James anyway?

    Re: James Gray sighting

Hey Jules! This is the condensed version from Wikipedia. Smile

Busking is when artists (musicians, clowns, street artists, etc.) perform live in public places to entertain people.

People busk for a variety of reasons, including for money, for fun, the attention they get, to socialize or meet people, the love of their art, or to practice their skills or try out new material in front of an audience. Some buskers only work part time, while others make a full time living performing on the streets. Some buskers do professional entertainment gigs in addition to working the streets.

Some people manage only pocket change from busking, while others can amass substantial incomes. An act that might make money at one place and time may not work at all in another setting. A busker's income depends on many conditions, including the composition of the audience, the type and quality of the performance, the weather, and the time of day. Location can be the key, and competition from other entertainers can also play a role, both positively and negatively.

Busking can be the bottom rung of the entertainment industry, and some of the most famous groups and superstars started their careers as buskers. Examples include the Cirque Du Soleil, Stomp, Bob Hope, George Burns, Rod Stewart, Dolly Parton, Eric Clapton, Simon and Garfunkel, Jimmy Buffett, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Pierce Brosnan, Robin Williams, Jason Alexander, Beck, and Joni Mitchell.
