    BR Rodeo heading to Afghanistan

Just heard an interview with Jim on CBC Montreal radio and he mentioned the band will be heading to Afghanstan in March.

Other plans in 2008 include their tour, Lots of summer shows, heading to the States in May...(also mention there is a second Montreal show added on Feb 2nd...but wasn't that the orginal date and then it got changed to Jan 31st?...think he may be confused!)

The interviewer also asked him why they never do Xmas songs and Jim brought up Blue Christmas and how embarrassed he is of that prodution.  Perhaps next year they will put out at Xmas CD, he said but I think he only said that to plesae the interviewer...but we can hold it to him.

His answer to the 5 best CDs this year...

    Small Miracles,

    Dwight Yoakam sings Buck Owens

    The Sadies latest

    Wilco's latest

    John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall

His answer to best concert in 2007

Recently they played at Greg's girlfriends mothers birthday party at her farm and loved that close family atmosphere etc.

Where does he get all those cowboy shirts?

    Kensington Market in Toronto.

    Somthing he learned this year?

Each year he learns how much he doesn't know and also to accept differences...such as his brothers opinion of George Bush etc.

Somtimes CBC has their interviews online the day after...I will look tomorrow and post it if it is.  I found it brief but informative!

Thanks for this, it was nice reading.

Of course I absolutely agree with him 100% that Small Miracles (BR) and New Season (The Sadies) should be in the top 5 cds of this year

That would have been one heck of a concert at that intimate birthday party.Yes

    Thanks for posting that! Smile

Dan and I are huge Dwight and Buck Owens fans. We picked up Dwight's latest album as soon as it was released.  I highly recommend this album even if you're not a Buck Owens fan. It's absolutely fabulous! "Close Up The Honkey Tonks" is my favorite!

    Joanne:

The original date for Montreal was February 1st, Joanne.  I guess that means they will be here on the 31st of January, then on to Barrie on Feb 1st, and then back again in Montreal for the 2nd show.   I just knew they couldn't play only one night in Montreal! LOL!

Interesting that they will be going to Afghanistan. There was an interview on TV last night with some Quebec comedians who were there entertaining the troops for a week. They said that when you go to Tim Horton's over there, you get your coffee with one spoonful of sugar and one spoonful of sand in it!  I'm sure BR will get a great reception from our troops.

So glad to know that they are going overseas. I haven't been aware of many artists going at all, especially Canadians. ( I know it's risky and all)

A friend of mine's brother has done 2 tours now and she doesn't provide details but just being there is hard on a person besides what they experience. I know that this will be a special time for the band and their fans. Good on ya!!!!

What a great post Joanne.  So much info from one interview!Yes

I think it is really wonderful that Blue Rodeo is going to Afghanistan.   Imagine how wonderful it will be for our men & women serving there to get to see Blue Rodeo.  My God we think we get excited about seeing the band.  I would be terrified to go there myself and I really admire the band for doing this.

Nice to hear rumours of some US shows.  Hopefully they will come west this time around.

I can relate to what Jim learned this year.  Thankfully my brother & Dad are not fans of Bush but they admire our PM a lot more than I do.  I try to keep an open mind & accept they are wrong....oops I mean accept our differences.Wink

Re: BR Rodeo heading to Afghanistan

Does anybody know when BR is heading for Afghanistan and how long they will be there?  It should be quite an experience!  I hope we get to hear about it.

The Ottawa Sun had an article on their departure on the 16th. Unfortunately, you have to pay to get it now.

Why isn't an event like this on the website? Is there coverage coming?

Re: BR Rodeo heading to Afghanistan

Well, the band acutally landed early in the day on March 17 (their time). They have been spending time overseas at a base and they played hockey with the legends of hockey and they played a set on March 17th. The troops had a blast and loved the music. Jim invited some guys up to sing and a very good friend of mine sang "Bad Timing". The band was fantastic to the troops and were genuinely interested in their job and what they do. Next is off to Afghanistan then home. Thought some of you might want to know. Any questions, I can likely answer for you. I am a nurse (civilian) and I work with our troops at CFB Trenton. I am proud our favourite band took the time to boost morale. Good for them!
