Why are Alaskans not familiar with Blue Rodeo?

Greetings from Central, Alaska! The first time I heard Blue Rodeo was on the road through Canada returning from vacation in the lower 48 states Feb 1, 08 on CBC live as we tuned in at Whitehorse, YT. We loved the music so much I ordered 3 of their cd's as soon as I got home. Blue Rodeo is the best band I have heard in a long, long time and I can't figure out why they haven't been heavily promoted in Alaska. Nobody has heard of them here. We only receive a few radio stations in Central, KUAC on FM Radio out of Fairbanks and on AM KZPA out of Fort Yukon and they broadcast KSKO from McGrath, all Public Radio Stations. Fairbanks and Anchorage both have popular commercial radio stations. I would love to see Blue Rodeo come to Fairbanks, but if nobody is aware of how good they are, they might not sell enough tickets to make it worht their while. I'm rather surprised at this treasure of a band hidden for so long from Alaskan ears. Maybe I am just isolated and haven't heard them on the air. If there are any other Alaskan fans out there I want to hear from them, and if Blue Rodeo can start promoting their music in Alaska I know they would sell more cd's. We love you!!

Welcome to the board ArcticWildflower Big Smile

Not sure why you haven't heard of Blue Rodeo in the past, but they are awesome aren't theyYes  Their music just seems to move you. Hopefully you'll hear more Blue Rodeo where you are, but maybe you should get in touch with your radio stations and see if they are on the playlist. Would be wonderful to get more fans from Alaska on board. I'm sure that someday the boys would love to play out there, I know they play in many places you would never ever think of, so never say never.

Hey, Justaroundmidnight! Thanks for the warm welcome. I wouldn't expect any less from Canada though! I told my friend at KZPA about Blue Rodeo and send her some cd's so hopefully they will start playing their music. It's easy to keep listening to the same songs over and over again! I just love almost every song on the cd's I bought! I have their Greatest Hits, Five Days in May and Small Miracles. I don't know which one to buy next. Any suggestions?

Re: Why are Alaskans not familiar with Blue Rodeo?

Well the cd's you have already are fantastic. I love them all, you should get their dvd In Stereovision as well, that's totally out of this world. You'll enjoy that for sure.

If you like to hear all their hits and you have their Greatest Hits, then I recommend Just Like a Vacation cause it has most of their hits as well as their most popular songs. Love the cd Outskirts, their first one, it's got many of my favourites on that. Diamond Mine ooohhhhhh I love that one too.   Hmmmm you might be talking to the wrong person cause I would suggest you slowly buy all the cd's for your cd library, just too GOOD to make choices. So whenever you're out and about and see one buy it, or better yet, just order from the website store and you'll get it delivered to your door.

Whatever cd's you end up buying, you won't be disappointed.

Re: Why are Alaskans not familiar with Blue Rodeo?

Thank you Josh! And thanks for the suggestions justaroundmidnight;-) I know I'll end up with all their cd's and hungry for more! Yeah, Diamond Mine is so awesome the way it just goes on and on and on! It keeps me spell bound! Their music shares resemblance to many famous musicians in history yet they have their own refreshing awakening sound you can't compare to anyone. They are the springtime of the music industry! Where can I find out who wrote the lyrics to some of my favorite songs, or is it always the same writer?

For the BR songs, it's mostly Jim and Greg, they do have some that they didn't write, but they usually write their own stuff.  I would say about 99% are theirs. You have to see these guys LIVE especially Diamond Mine, OMG it's out of this world.

Where is St. Catharines? Is that in Quebec? My other half grew up in St. Methode, Quebec. He was the one when we heard their live concert on the radio who said "What's wrong with this concert?" I would love to see them live! Guess I'll have to plan it on one of our vacations through Canada. I love B.C.. I did see some of their videos on You Tube, even Diamond Mine. Where I grew up in Massachusetts there is this big outdoor amphitheater called Great Woods. That would be an awesome place to see them live;-)

Re: Why are Alaskans not familiar with Blue Rodeo?

Welcome ArcticWildflower.  I'm just a little south of you....well alot little south of youStick out tongue  We get most of the Alaskan traveller traffic through here. I wouldn't doubt you passed through Quesnel on you trip.

Anyhow, I would keep an eye on the board and on the events listings for summer shows.  BR quite often plays some summer festivals in BC, and if not they always play Stanley Park in Vancouver towards the end of August.  Its a must see outdoor show!!

Glad to see the BR bug hitting Alaska!!

Re: Why are Alaskans not familiar with Blue Rodeo?

St. Catharines is in Ontario, an hour away from Toronto, 30 minutes away from Buffalo and 15 minutes away from Niagara Falls.

You should really try to catch the band live, you will really really enjoy it. Keep an eye out like AlreadyGone has mentioned for an outdoor venue especially in BC but theatre setting is truly amazing as well. You won't be able to keep still......I know I can'tSurprisebut well all know that alreadyWinkEmbarrassedBig Smile  Maybe you'll be able to catch them while vacationing somewhere, they are always busy in the summer with these kinds of festivals. Just keep your ears and eyes opened and you won't regret it. As well, always check their events page and of course, we always discuss shows, so you'll be certain to know when one is happening.

Re: Why are Alaskans not familiar with Blue Rodeo?

The people on this board find upcoming shows faster than the events page lists them, so stop by from time to time.

Plus, if you set up an account with the store, you can get really great pre-sale seats for at least some of the shows. I'm spoiled for life now that I've had front row seats. I hope that you will be too, someday. Smile

Re: Why are Alaskans not familiar with Blue Rodeo?

Thank you so much everybody! And Alreadygone, I can make you laugh, because up until this year when we drove through Quesnel, I always pronounced it Kweznell, LOL! Love Route 97, and we checked out Lake Shuswap area, drove all the way out to Seymore Arm to see that remote community. We already live remote, but heard it was nice, and we liked it but at least we have power and telephone where we live now and I am the one who works on the phones here. We have a flying service also, check out our web site, www.circleair.com;-) We love Alaska, but really love B.C. too! I wouldn't mind a place at Scotch Creek even if it wasn't on the lake. I really loved seeing some of the Native people in BC and YT. I travel for work in the Athabascan villages in northeastern Alaska and they make me feel so at home! Yup, and definitely will be looking for an opportunity to go see Blue Rodeo. I have a friend in Vernon, BC now, too who might want to join me. Oh, and if anyone hears of reasonable land on a lake somewhere in B.C. for sale clue me in, eh? You can e-mail me at arcticwildflower@aol.com. Thanks everyone!

Re: Why are Alaskans not familiar with Blue Rodeo?

    Welcome ArcticWildFlower!!!

Blue Rodeo is an amazing band and their music spans so many genres...if one could even say that...but I guess one could, since I just did.

But I could see how hearing them once would get you hooked....it did me!!! Like JAM, I would have to say that all the cd's are a must. Its really hard to pick one to recommend because I know if you like one you'd like them all. Outskirts is most definetley a necessity, however!

That's so cool you live in Alaska...that's one place I've always wanted to visit...I'm in the states but the southern portion, in fact totally, diagonally opposite of you all!!! LOL!!! Blue Rodeo is scarce around these parts so I know how frustrating it is to not hear them on the radio or even be able to buy a cd at a store. But I get by with online ordering and a yearly trip back home!

Re: Why are Alaskans not familiar with Blue Rodeo?

Outskirts it is then! Will have to order it soon as I can. I am off to shovel snow for a family from S.C. that will arrive Thursday to make Alaska their new home! I'll turn them on to BR, certainly!! We have a guest house and a rental cabin whenever you do make it up here, Katiescarlet, if you need to get away from the humit hot weather! FLA is cool, love the color of the water at the Keys!

Welcome AW!  For your next album purchase  I would say you are definitely on the right track. Outskirts would be my first recommendation as well.Smile
