American Idol's David Cook's Cover of First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

If any of you watch American Idol, which this is the first year I am---well it was the semi finals last night, and one song had me in tears. Not sure if it's the song, if it's the way it was sung or what, but last night I cried, and when I searched it on YouTube and found it and listened, I cried again, soooooo I just wanted to share with all of you something that has touched me very deeply.

I wish he could have done the complete song instead of only 1:34 minutes of it! Especially when they get down to the top 10 finalists, let them really do the song justice by singing the whole song - that's one thing I don't like about American/Canadian Idol. But I agree that David was impressive; he's a good singer, and the way he did the song was so different from the original. It proves that a great song will sound great no matter what style you choose to do it.

Yeah, you know, I don't like the fact that the song has to be cut short.....instead of doing 3 songs, let them do 2 in the full version.

I do like the way he handles himself and the way he changes the song to make it his own--it is a sign of a talented artist.

I sooo dislike the original version....there is a story.

I did however, enjjoyy David's version. In fact, he's one of the most interesting entainers they've had on ever. His musical accents and twists are right up my alley. Very wise and creative in his choices.

In fact, I hope he doesn't win the contest. This way he will have more freedom and say on what he sings and how he does it and not sound too "poppy". In my opinion, this venue is more suited to the other David.

Thanks for the link JAM. I watched it on t.v. but it was great to hear it again ~ WOW~ what a talent!! He's the one that I wait to hear every week. The finale should be a good one with the 2 Davids.

I really don't like that song either, but after all your raves, I gave it a go. He did it well, it didn't sound so dirgy!!

I liked David Cook's version very much as well. I agree with you, W & T, he will have more freedom if he does not win that contest. Although I think he deserves to win!

Do you remember a few weeks ago when he covered Billie Jean? I had not heard of Chris Cornell's version of it but it sure made me look for it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_aiawC-9aM

This will help to get there.

Thanks for the link Diane. David did a awesome job of  Billie Jean I thought it was better than Micheal's.

You know, I never heard this version either and the way David sang it totally blew me away. I think he has all that it takes to make it in the music industry, he has the mannerisms, he has the ability and talent, he has the drive and he has the knowledge of what can touch the fans.  The way he sang this song, as with all the other songs, are just phenomenal.  To boot, he doesn't seem arrogant or "into" himself thinking he's better than anyone else. He's very humble YesBig Smile

Well David Cook won last night and I just loved all his performance last night. This was awesome: Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For

How about his performance with ZZ TOP though this video isn't that clear, it still sounds good.
